Hi All,

I'm hoping for some help with a little predicament I’m in.

I've just built a conservatory on the rear elevation of my house, In the conservatory I need 4 double and one single socket for various domestic items, TV, DVD & low wattage lamps etc.

I understand that it needs to be certified etc and I have a friend who is an electrician who has agreed to connect up and certify for me but unfortunately he has suffered a bereavement and I have the plasterers in next week so need to have run the cables/armoring etc in the walls before they can plaster.

Can anyone advise me what gauge cables I need to run in the walls and if I can spur off the downstairs socket ring.

I know I have probably missed key bits of information that you guys will need, so sorry in advance but any help you can provide would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Without seeing the job no is really isn't possible to comment on the installation, or any works that can be carried out on it.

Can you not get another electrician in to do the work?

It sounds like this job might need part P notifying too, which unless a registered electrician carries out the first and second fixed, the only way to get round it would be too notify your LABC and pay there appropriate fee

Can you not ask your "electrician" friend for futher advice on what to do.

unfortunately Dillb is right. There are too many variables to be able to say with any certainty what you need to do to meet the regs and make it safe. If you take advice here there is a good change you would have to rip it out and replace it later.
Even the "can I spur of a downstairs socket ring" question can only be answered by saying "maybe, maybe not...."

If you can't get advice from the guy who has already seen it (assuming he has....) then you really are best to either get another electrician in or delay the plasterers.

The size of the cables is a much later sort of thing, really.

My first query would be
Where can i get a feed for the lighting and the sockets.
Then, how will I run the cables from there to the conservatory
Then, are those circuits RCD protected and what will i need to do to get them RCD protected in order to comply with wiring regulations.

THEN you can look at actually running cables. I agree with the above. You need to get some skilled input, on site. I suggest you postpone the plasterers.

PS, what stage is the construction at? The best time to run the cables is when you've just got the dwarf walls and no floor screed. If the plasterers are scheduled I'm guessing you've alreay got the frame and glass up? If so, I would sack the project manager.

Thanks for your advice, i had suspected that this might be the case. I am located just outside Reading in Berkshire, if anyone is interested please let me know.

sure there's some on here in your area. you'll get a response soon.

If by that statement, you are intending on installing the cables yourself, that is not the way to comply with part p

The other solution for you, may be to simply postpone the plasterers for a short period

oops
I see brman as already suggested the same

The structure is complete and water tight with the concrete flooring in but the screed has not yet been laid, the walls are channelled and ready to accept cable and armoring.

I will await someone who can come and quote for me.

Again, thanks for your help.
