Discuss advice on a mobile website in the Computer and Networking Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

O

oldtimer

OK here it is I have a website and I have just bought a .mobi domain so my question is has anybody else got one as I am looking for advice

1.Is there free software to let me build a mobile website
2. What is subdomain does this mean I can attach it to my website
3. Do i have to have a seperate web hosting for it.

Sorry to ask these questions now I have ben doing a lot of research and basically I took the plunge as all I hear is people surfing on their phone

A separate mobile website is probably not the best answer as you then have two websites to try and keep up the rankings on the search engines.

Best way is to get your website designed with mobile in mind, there are lots of ways to do this, changing style sheets or a mobile version on a subdomain personally I would not suggest to people having a separate domain for a mobile site but it is a option.

As for getting your mobile site designed I would say you would have to get it done by a professional company so you know it will be compatible with all mobile browsers into the future, the other option would be to have some apps made for iPhone and Android.

Getting apps made can be expensive but if it is just for a brochure website with no dynamic content and basically the content is remaining the same then it should cost no more than £150 for Android an £250 for iOS, iOS is always more expensive because to be honest it is a pain in the butt to publish a iOS app.

Your subdomain question, depending on your hosting you can have 1 to unlimited subdomains and this would be the perfect option for a mobile site.

If you have any other questions please ask, always happy to give advice on website things :)

Just an update I purchased a mobi domain and hosting for £35 I also bought web design software and a mobile site template for £60 and have created a new website as my last one was made from MS Publisher and I was told it was too clunky . Also got a bit of software that if a mobile device visits my sites then they are asked if they want to be diverted to the mobi site.

Anyway i thought I would update you and I will let you know how i got on as I have submitted them to the search engines and it can take 2-3 weeks for them to get indexed.

i make websites, why not try something like wordpress and customize it, then you can serve a php page to detect mobiles and in turn serve a mobile version theme of ther site
