I have been looking for an opportunity into the Electrical Industry for over a year now. I have almost completed my Level 3 2365. I was speaking to my Uncle how is now a retired Electrician. He said that a good area to look at would be Fire Alarms and Security, as its a specialist field. I had an interview at a company who have offered me an apprenticeship 3 years, 1 day in college and the other 4 working for them. They have said however the pay is £3.90 an hour and 39 hours a week. They will collect me and drop me back at the office, so no need to use my car. I could get the train to the office as parking I a bit of a nightmare.

Does this sound a good opportunity? The only concern was the pay, I assumed being 33 years old that they would have to pay me min wage of £8.21 or JIB rates based on an Adult Trainee which is £10.97

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and been taken on as an Adult Trainee/Apprentice?

I believe £3.90 will only be the first year and in year 2 it will go up around the rate you said. Personally if that wage doesnt effect you financially I would jump at the chance if I was you!

Whether this is a good opportunity you will only know if you jump in and try. Apprenticeships are like gold dust and onsite experience cannot be found in a college room.

You would think thst HM Guv would split apprentice rates as they have 'standard wage' 18, 21, 25+ it'd make thore viable for 25+ to get experience in their foeld while at the same time not financially screwing them.

I'd say take it BUay sure you're financially sound first. You don't want to work to be worse off, experience be damned, especially if you have a family.

I agree mate that the Government should pay more especially 25+ as many know who are trying to get experience it’s hard, when your just starting out. I start Monday, I will see how it goes and take each day as it comes. I also have another two companies in the same sector Fire and Security coming back to me, but they would pay wages as an Adult Trainee over £9.50, NSI/FIA and BAFE training courses.

Nice, they still taking on? I'm not far from ya ?

My apprentice was on around £4 per hour in his first year. SJIB rates dictate this. He’s now way over double this in year 2. He worked 3 jobs, just depends how hungry you are for the opportunity I suppose?

I’m not complaining, I’ve been trying for a year and well over 200 - 300 companies around the North West to take me on as an Adult Trainee. It’s a great opportunity, the low pay is something you have to accept for the first year. But then the other two companies may come back also with offers.

@RDB85 apologies if I made it sound as though you were moaning as I didn't think you were. The industry sucks for new entrants at the moment - for financial incentives. Particularly so if you are a little older than the usual 16/18 year olds. I appreaciet its no consolation but I get no financial assistance towards my apprentice either, save his course/college is paid for. He's cost me money in slowing my work rate down not least other business expenses. But he will come good, the industry gets another worker and he can stay in the local community.

Good luck with your endeavours

So my apprenticeship was pulled by the employer. Just said they can no longer offer it so I’m not looking again for work. Year on and still no joy.

From my understanding they only have to pay you JIB rate if they follow the JIB pay grades.

Also, you are only entitled to apprentice wage for the first year and only minimum wage if you are 19 or over after the first year.

Hope this helps.
