Hey guys,
Currently doing level 1 in electrical installation(should be doing level 2 if I'm honest) all good, no problems flying through both practical and theory work with little or no trouble but i would much prefer an apprenticeship(Obviously) and was hoping for some advice on contacting some companies
Would i be better off E-mailing them? just straight up cold calling them? What should i say?
Which sites would be better to get their contact details other than yell?
Bit worried seeing as i'm 18 at the moment and being told at 19 there's a slim chance of finding an apprenticeship
Appreciate the input guys:grin:

Definitely write to companies and also follow up with a phone call and/or an email. Look into big manufacturing companies, they normally have good industrial sparky apprenticeships (the good/ hard stuff).....write to all electrical companies and also any building maintenance companies as they also have apprenticeships for maintenance electricians.....

Try Norland Managed Services (i work for them and they are a good company).......MITIE, BTFS, Interserve, Vincie, balfour beaty. There are loads more just cant remember off the top of my head........these are all facilities type companies (well amongst other things)

Thanks guy, really appreciate the help. I'll be sure to look into it first thing tomorrow. My last job hunt didn't go so well... Cold calling companies like "Uhh.. wanna hire an apprentice"(Something along those lines anyway) although one guy was too polite to tell me to bugger off and asked me to text the details through haha.

Mark Routledge Electrical Services Limited

these are looking for an apprentice in west yorkshire mate....

44minute drive from mine and I'm not driving yet ... got my practical test on the 28th.

Unfortunately there are no apprenticeships on the contract i am on........you should enquire through there website mate....im sure you will get some feedback
Only joking.. Unless you actually could put in a good word then I totally wasn't joking ;) and applied online for the company you're at.

Letters are your best bet, worked for me. Be as honest as you can and be prepared to work your arse off and don't be put off by potentially having to commute (good luck with your test BTW). My boss is located 35 miles from me (I live in the middle of nowhere). This meant I covered about 40k miles commuting and wrote off a car in my first two years but was worth it to get to the stage I am now - just started 3rd year at college, got quite a large pay rise and a brand new van!

Oh and I was 20 when I started.

Oh and it is worth waiting for the right job if you are serious about this career choice. It took me around 8 months but I ended up working for the only company I really wanted to!

I don't mind working my arse off ... sure beats doing roofing with my dad  and i wouldn't mind commuting it's just most placements are well over an hour away and it's usually a say 8am start? most busses start running at 7(Few run at 6:30) and thanks going to be so great when i get my license can do so much more(it's a pain relying on busses and walking) and oo very nice sounds like the company you're with has got you all sorted sounds like a cosy little job you've got.
Good to hear it's not impossible to find an apprenticeship(I presume you're in an apprenticeship) because that's one of my biggest worries. Big thanks for the advice mate.

I've got a lot of sympathy for you at the moment whilst you're without your own transport. I grew up on the outskirts of Bradford and it was a right ball ache getting about.

Summat you might not have thought about is a bike. I know it's not the flattest bit of the country but even so you can probably count on about 10 miles an hour; and that might get something within your range if there isn't a direct bus.

Or a scooter?

My mum wouldn't let be have a bike haha she was anxious about me having a 50cc Quad haha i should be driving in no time. Got my test booked for the 28th so fingers crossed

Write letters to all the electrical companies you can, you never know, you could get lucky, as for transport, when I was an apprentice I had to use public transport, if you find it difficult to write letters have a look on the net for sample letters, be short and to the point, don't waffle, give it a try you never know, good luck. The Government Dept I work for take on apprentices but Nottingham is a bit of a distance from MK.
