Hi all,

Right, I'll try and make it as short as possible. A relative has come to me for advice on an alarm system for their garage. Basically they want an alarm system installed in there and the problem I'm having is that they want some sort of sensor for the garage door, so that if someone is trying to damage it to break in, then it will go off!

Now I've had a look for sensors and the only one i can really find are the ones that are generally used for roller shutter doors. But they want one that will detect tampering before they actually get through the door. The only thing i can think of for that is a shock/vibration sensor but I'm thinking the wind may set this off if its blowing hard enough against the door. The door is your typical tilt type garage door.

What do you guys advise? Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Yep, you are really looking at an inertia sensor. If the garage door is not adjacent to public access (i.e. no kids giving the door a thump/kick) you might get away with it.
Other (perhaps not acceptable) option is to go for a key switch set, so even if the door is opened a fraction without using the key switch, the alarm goes off.

Regards.

@ monkeyelectric - Totally my first thought hahaha!

And polo, I think theyll end up going with the inertia/shock sensor option in the end. The door should be fine, as it faces into a small lane that is only really used for access to the houses and theres never any kids out there.

What exactly do you mean by the key switch set?

i would go with 2 shock sensors, one each side. fix about half way up the frame. set the sensitivity about 1/2 way. test by tapping the frame with a screwdriver handle. several raps should activate the sensor/s.

Basically, a key switch on the outside of the garage to set/unset the alarm - it means you don't have to have an entry time set (the entry time could be "used" if the door was forced open to get in/out before the alarm went from entry to alarm mode).

Regards.

Wire as my garage with a valuable motorcycle in it, door switch wired to an alarm in my bedroom so they don't know it's going off.......wakes me up......I go down and visit our intruders with a lump of 2x2
job done!

2x2 you lightweight, 3x2 with a couple of nails ins what you need, makes sure they get the point.lol

The police might ask why you were walking around with a bit of 2x2... where as if you have a big metal torch by your bed then you can use that to see in the dark and also good for 'defending yourself'.

Wouldn't some sort of PIR sensor at the front of the garage be better. One that makes a sound (not too loud) if anyone walks up to it even before they get to the garage door? Then have a normal alarm on the garage.

I think theyll end up wanting the shock sensors and we'll see how they go! Think the key switch is a great idea too! Thanks for all the advice everyone!
