hello all, have been lurking for a while, thought i'd pop myself back into the mix :)
just wondering if anyone has any tips on testing faults on a ring, i seem to chase faults around houses and it seems i never manage to guess the middle of the ring and only clear one or two sockets everytime.
if anyone has a foolproof way of testing a ring with a short on i would greatly appreacite it. is continuity going to help me much cause i only really i/r test, i think cont will show false readings if im testing the leg with the short on?!
thanks all x

You coud pick a point, d/c it and long-lead back to the C/U end, then measure which side's reading is highest and work from that, but I recon that's probably more trouble than it's worth. As far as I know there's no surefire way to do it every time, just go eeny-meany-miney-mo at somewhere near the middle. If there are any ways to do this, I would be very interested to hear them.

I have an absolute 100% method that will never fail

You would have to be on the same job as myself for me to demonstrate the technique

Put simply, whichever starting point I make, to narrow down the offending leg, just choose somewhere else, because, you can guarentee,I will have taken the majority of sockets off before I get to the last one, which will inevitably be where the fault is located

It is pot luck whatever system you try

hahaha made me chuckle
without being the istaller or designer you re going to be hard pressed to know where the center is i would of thought

Not sure I understand exactly, but are you saying you have a L-N short on a ring circuit? Disconnect each end of the ring at the CU. Test the L-N impedence at each end of the ring. This will give you an idea of how far around the ring the fault is, or how close to the CU it is. Then go around and test the L-N impedence at every socket in the ring. You will see that there will be one with the lowest reading, meaning the short is somewhere to either side of that socket, or one will be zero, meaning the fault is at or near the socket itself. Is that the kind of thing you mean?
