Hi

I am attending a meeting soon to discuss the requirements for a rebuild (burnt down) of a 3 bed, 2 storey thatched cottage. A person from the bank will be there aswell to discuss money, along with the architect and builder. As this is new to me does anyone have any advice on conduct and things i should request or ask before commencing work?

Stand up straight, don't sneeze on any of them and whatever you do hit on them unless they give you the eye! Seriously though you need a copy of the plans, specs and a schedule of when you can do your work. Who's paying you the insurance company direct, the homeowner or the builder?

You probably need to ask what wiring would be acceptable for the roof space.

Historically vermin have been a problem for cables in loft spaces (and under floorboards) in which case cables should be vermin proof - enclosed in conduit/trunking, SWA or MIC. In saying that I've seen a number of new build thatched houses with T&E in the loft!

Google 'Dorset Model' for more advice!

I would avoid any job paid for by insuarance and /or a bank, they will not want to pay you and whatever you do get they will beat you down until the pips squeek...and then some.....it's "their job" to do that to you.....also a rewire on a burnt down thatched roof house would be a nightmare.....different regulations on listed buildings etc....the slightest thing the Architect doesn't like, or the bank, or the insurer.....or the local council...and the toys will get thrown out of the pram...

you will likely end up stressed and out of pocket with that kind of situation......tell them to get in the Electricity company's own sparks to do it and it will cost them a fortune but at least they will not get away with avoiding paying them...or heel dragging with the money for 3 years hoping you give up...
