Hi,

I am planning on using an electric contact grill on an outdoor food stall. (Link to the product manual below)

http://www.catering-appliance.com/p...5c93208d83c4f5e83/pantheon-cgl2s-warranty.pdf

The grill (Product - CG2LS) needs 2 x 2200 watts and has 2 x 13amp plugs.

The power supply at the market is one 16amp output.

How do I run both of the plugs without overloading the power supply?

I am planning to run a 30 meter 16a to 13a 4-way adapter to the appliance.

Can I put both 13a plugs into the same adapter? Do I need a 16a splitter and two 13a adapters? Is it possible to run this appliance from one 16a output?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks, CG

As above

Your Grill exceeds the power available, you best option would be gas version with bottle if you cannot arrange more power, you will probably need that power anyway if you have any other electrics - you could look into getting a generator too.

Ps - multiway adaptors 13amp plug can only supply the max rating of the fuse protecting them (13amps) so no matter how may ways your adaptor is you can only plug on grill in.

It's not possible, you will most likely end up with your 4way adaptor melting.
This is a ridiculously common occurrence at outdoor events, I've lost count of the number of 4ways we have lost due to catering people doing this kind of thing.
Your best bet is to just use one side of the grill.
Also you need to make sure the 4way is of the fused type, not the unfused type

Thanks a lot for your help. This is a nightmare. I have used the grill at home, using two 13a sockets on the wall. How come this has worked ok?

If I buy a smaller unit that uses 2x 1.8kw, will this solve my problem? Can I then plug them into the same 4-way adapter?

Thanks CG

Plugging in to two different sockets gives you 13A to each side of the grill. Plugging a 4 way in to one socket then both in to that 4 way only gives you 13A for both of them.
They are built with 2 plugs because they need more power than one plug can supply.
2x1.8KW will require 15A to operate, it will not be safe on a single 13A plug. It would however be ok on a 16A supply but not via a 13A 4 way. You will need to split the 16A supply with a ray gun or similar adaptor then use 2x 16-13 adaptors
Ray gun:

I think your confusing yourself, an adapter with have a 13amp fuse in it so no matter if your plug one item or 4 into it you cannot exceed 13amps total demand, your 2 items will exceed this with a load of 15.65amps ... because of the time curve it takes for your fuse to operate at this current it will be highly likely your plug and socket will overheat and be either a shock risk or fire hazard.

You have a 16amp available supply approx 4kw ... you may get away with 2 x 1.8 but they have to be on their own socket not through a multiway extension and this leaves little surplus for anything else electric, so no making a brew etc...

The use of it at home is different as you have possible plugged it into a ring main with double the capacity of what the market stall is offering you, you need to request a larger supply if you want to go with your original concept, would a smaller unit serve your needs as a commercial venture? that would be my next question.

From how i am reading this (what isnt great way)

30m away from the socket you want to run two grills

So two LONG RCD Protected Cables for Each of the Grills
also i am guessing being outdoors you would want to cover the Cable (Sleeping Police men) so people dont trip over the cable
which will lower the current capacity of the said cable.

<hope i aint misted any thing>

Do you have any experience of temporary installations of this nature?

If by sleeping policemen you mean cable ramps then they are really a last resort soloution if no other option is available.
We've been through legal proceedings recently due to someone tripping over the damn things.
The first choice is always to run the cables in locations where they don't present a trip hazard
