Hello all

New to here and it seems i've stumbled across a brilliant site.

My query is not a new one i'm afraid so i apologise if similar ground has been covered.

I'm just looking for advice as to what is the place to go forward. Situation is that i've recently been laid off having done 6 months as an Electrician's mate at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. This is my only electrical experience. Absolutely loved it and wish to fully pursue a career. Qualifictions wise i have the 2330 (Levels 2&3) and my 17th Edition.

Obviously times are really hard at moment and there's not much work about. I'm sending out my CV and contacting firms on a daily basis with no luck so far. But i'm gonna keep me chin up and keep trying.

In order to improve my prospects, i was wondering whats the next step in terms of qualifications as i'm a bit confused. Should i do the 2391 before anything else?

I've been offered two full domestic rewires to do but frustratingly had to turn them down. I'm confident enough to do most of the job but i'd rather do things correctly and leave the work to someone who knows fully what they're doing and who's fully qualified. (i have been helping out on one these which has been great. Under supervision i've installed 2 rings, 2 lighting circuits, CU and Cooker) Which leads to, what do i need to become fully qualifed on a domestic level? I understand i will need to be Part P registered. Who are the best providers for this? I checked NICEIC and they recommend the DISQ course but then state thats for experienced domestic installers.

I'm a great believer in learning off experienced sparks but its hard to get experience at mo and i hate sitting on my hands.

Sorry once again if you've seen this all before but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I only ask i've received lots of conflicting information (even with Electricians i've worked with!!)

I too am also in a sticky situation were i have just been made redundant after 6 years, i am looking at going self employed/sole trader. But you need to meet so much criteria before getting Part P as on Welcome to ELECSA .
I am 16th edition while this is ok i could still do with doing the one day upgrade to 17th. Also i could do with getting 2391 along with everything else this adds up to quite a few ££££££.

2391 is a very difficult exam to pass Im studying for that at present and my head is spinning:confused: you may be better off investing your money on going part p with one of the competent person schemes at least that way you will be earning the money to pay for 2391.

First stop would be business link its a free course on starting your own business and covers everything from tax to marketing at least you will know what you are letting yourself in for if you cant get employment.

Good luck

Chris

Yes thanks acat i am doing courses through business link, but as i said i do need to get employment for the min to not only pay bills but to buy some gear.
As for doing the 2391 that is for my benifit as another notch on my belt so to speak, i would not be doing it for a bit anway, but good look on yours.

Are you doing itwith private company, or are you studying yourselk then booking for tests. Let us now how you are doing on the 2391.

acat - NICEIC told me i needed to do 2391 Inspection & Testing before i could try and register for Part P. This is why i'm confused

Conmeister; Don't turn away work, why not employ an electrician you trust whom you can assist whilst he is working for you?:D

Notsosmart - I've assisted on one of the jobs (actually i've done most of it). One of my concerns seems to be certification and what order to get it in. Seems to be alot of conflicting information out there.

You do not NEED the 2391 to become registered, however, all scheme providers have their own little rules and if NICEIC say you do, then you do.

You could always join one of the others that dont require it, and then move to NIC when you have done it.
