Hey guys

you have probably had this type of thread before but here goes:

can anyone point me in the right direction to become an electrician at the young age of 31

I wish I had done an apprenticeship when I was 16/17 but just couldnt do it at the time :(

Now I see these adverts in the paper to 'train to be an electrician' but they all seem quite expensive
is there any way at my age to train on the job?
I need to get out of my deadend job, ive been doing it way too long

any help would be greatly appreciated :):D

try part time at college, just completed mine after 3 yrs, approx 6 hrs a week for 32 wks per year. This is up to C&G 2330 standard, also look at doing 17th too?!

In the mean time u can stay employed with current job and still earn some money. Also ask around with some local electricians, offer to do some sat work for free to learn the ropes? would be good for both parties?

Worked for me bud!

Who knows where it might lead u?

If its something u really want to do than u wont look back!
:D

Hi,

I done exactly what you are thinking of doing. I was 30 and decided to put myself through a private college. £5000-£6000 later I got my 2330. Wrote around to more companies than you could shake a stick at I got nothing. Kept perservering and I finally got a break. A company took me on a trial (which I had to work for free having taken some holiday from my normal job) and offered me a job last week. I start in 10 days! I'll be on less money than I'm currently on now to start with, but with 2391 and some other courses on board I should be earning a bit more!

My advice to you would be that if you want it bad enough and work really really hard you'll get it. There are a lot of doom mongerers out there and I can understand their opinions but I firmly believe that if you go into it with 200% effort you can do anything. But if you believe what the private training providers say in that you do their course and you'll easily get a job then you're in for a shock. Its hard work but there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, very much appreciated

im under no illusion to the amount of work involved
Im currently doing a weekly secondment working with the H&S manager at my work & they want to put me through college to get the qualification needed to become the H&S managers assistant
so Im thinking, if im going to do college work it might as well be for something ive always wanted to do

Thanks again :D

try some simple things at beginning, like change sockets and light fittings, then can upgrade consumer unit, training is expensive but i think that is important, especially practical training and 2381 or Part P,
