Hi guys just a quick question for you whilst i am sitting here offshore wanting to get out of here!

i have just completed my Level 2 and Level 3 2330 electricial installation course, i have also done a level 2 NVQ boat building engineers course. what does this class me as? basicaly can i carry out domestic electrical work? sorry im just a little confused and would appreciate if someone could make it clearer to me

many thanks lewis

You could do domestics however in order to sign your own work off you would need to register with a governing body like NIC, Elecsa etc, otherwise you would have to notify BC for nearly every job you do and that can be expensive. You would also need to have your 17th ed wiring regs. ;)

i believe i have 17th edition wiring regs as i only finished my level 3 course 3 months ago..am i correct in saying this? i was trained up to 17th edition standards. how much do BC charge to inspect work?

Having level 3 2330 doesn't mean you have the 17th, the 17th is a seperate course (course code 2382). Building control can be anything in the region of ÂŁ100+

He is in a grey area as the 17th was introduced near the end of his year 2 2330.
I believe the 2382 course is only for those people who trained before the 17th was introduced (which, up to a year ago was everyone) and people qualifying from now onwards do not need the 2382 as they will be trained to the 17th as part of thier course.

Everyone still needs to do the 17th (2382) whether they qualified 10 years ago or whether they qualified 10 days ago.

that is where you are wrong matey...like said before i started my course late on, i was on the first to do the new course which is basically 2330 updated with 17th edition regs ;)

that is where you are wrong matey, as adamh has just correctly pointed out, if you have done the 2330 then you will only need to do the update course for the 17th which is 1 day with a 30 question exam, but you still have to sit the 2382 exam!

the 2330 is a course to give you theory knowledge of electrics, an insight to all the areas in the electrical industry and to also give you basic pratical experience.
As any electrical system has to be done to BS 7671 wiring requirements then it makes sense to teach people to the minimum standard that is required, being BS7671.
No point teching people how to wire a ring unless it meets the current requirments. You can easily sellotape the cable to the wall. It all may work but current requirments will say that's wrong.

Having the 17th edition shows you are able to know your way round the book, in a nut shell. But completing the 2330 does not give you the 17th edition cert. the level 3 technical cert and the 17th cert have two different c&g course codes, 2330 and 2382

However, back to the origional question, what can you call yourself.

Using the JIB definitions I'm afraid you don't even make the lowest grade of electrician :(

JIB Grading Definitions - Electrical Improver Grade

This grade has been introduced for apprentices who do not achieve their NVQ Level 3, and therefore are unable to complete their apprenticeship, to encourage them to remain in the industry. It is not a new grade to be utilised for NVQ Level 2 labour other than for apprentices who are registered on JIB Training Schemes and who have been unable to achieve the NVQ Level 3. It is the intention of the JIB to provide an opportunity for these apprentices to remain within the Industry.
Qualifications
Must satisfy the following three conditions:
(1) Must be registered with the JIB as an apprentice undertaking a JIB Training Scheme
(2) Must have achieved an NVQ Level 2
(3) Must have completed the further education courses, though not necessaryily have passed all the examinations, associated with the appropriate training scheme. These will normally be either the City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 and 2 or the City & Guilds 2351 or the City & Guilds 2330.

(I don't think the NVQ in boat building will count)
