hi could any1 tell me the best was i determing the age of differnt installations ?

yes i understand that mate i was thinking more along the lines of what year were sertain things introduced!!!
Well i know the harmonised colours came out around 2005,i started my apprenticeship in 1984 and black, red and green/yellow were around.Vulcanised cable probably goes back to the late 40s early 50s.Will have a proper look and post it unless someone beats me to it.

thanks alot any info would be appreciated :)
I found this, don't know if it will be of much help.
Signs of age:
Cables coated in black rubber (phased out in the 1960s)

Cables coated in lead or fabric (pre 1960s)

A fuse box with a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a haphazard
mixture of fuse boxes (pre 1960s)

Older round pin sockets and round light switches, braided flex
hanging from ceiling roses, brown and black Bakelite switches and
sockets mounted in skirting boards (pre 1960s)

Wall mounted switches in bathrooms (pre 1960s)
If you have any of these it is likely that your installation is over 40 years

old and may need rewiring.
