age of installation

hi could any1 tell me the best was i determing the age of differnt installations ?

Visually would be a good start.IE:type of cable used,type of CU,fuses,any earth present in the circuits,bonding,i could go on mate.

yes i understand that mate i was thinking more along the lines of what year were sertain things introduced!!!

Well i know the harmonised colours came out around 2005,i started my apprenticeship in 1984 and black,red and green/yellow were around.Vulcanised cable probably goes back to the late 40s early 50s.Will have a proper look and post it unless someone beats me to it.

Signs of age:​

Cables coated in black rubber (phased out in the 1960s)​

Cables coated in lead or fabric (pre 1960s)​

​

​

​

​

A fuse box with a wooden back, cast iron switches, or a haphazard
mixture of fuse boxes (pre 1960s)​

​

​

Older round pin sockets and round light switches, braided flex
hanging from ceiling roses, brown and black Bakelite switches and
sockets mounted in skirting boards (pre 1960s)​

​

​

​

Wall mounted switches in bathrooms (pre 1960s)
If you have any of these it is likely that your installation is over 40 years​

old and may need rewiring.
