Hi All,

I seem to be doing more and more work on my car as well as other family members cars, and I am looking at getting an air compressor and some air tools, mainly being a rattle gun. I'm after something that is good quality for the home mechanic, but also has enough capacity to run the rattle gun for undoing wheels and the like.

What brands should I be looking at for the compressor and rattle gun? What sort of capacities, in tank size and horsepower would be suitable? Any information, prices etc would be most appreciated.

Cheers

I used to have a 3 HP SIP compressor with a 50 L tank and an impact gun from machine mart. Seemed great at first, until the compressor keeps kicking in every few minutes. This was probably because the air gun was tosh to be homest. Couldn't use any sanders etc as the air consumption is way to high for the size of compressor

Now use a cordless impact wrench. Ok, it cost a fair bit to buy, but its used for other things when away from the garage.

For example, coming back from Dundee last year and had a flat on the M6. Had the cordless in the car and saved a shed load of time changing the wheel. Good job as at the time its was throwing it down with rain.

No way is it that bad ,working in Kirkton worst area of dundee and never had any problem with vans or tools ,there are a lot worse areas of glasgow and edinburgh

Try your local motor factors.
Forget your Halfords etc.
Look in Partco, Brown Brothers or any other primarily motor trade ony outlets, they often have own brand air tools.
I have several left over from my car time and they are all OK. The motor trade equivalent of CEF, N&E, Eddies etc.
In fact, one I had from Brown Brothers as an own brand unit is actually a Chicago Pneumatic (CP) item which are considered to be the mutts in certain circles.
