HI

Ive got a possible start as a maintenance elect, however, it asks for a basic understanding of PLC's.

I havent touched plcs for some years and would like some advice from the people who have, just enough to get me started again ;).

any help much appreciated.

James:)

Ask away may be able to help but more into Siemens now, :)

Hi James, Don't you mean Allen Bradley?

What do you need to know?

Very basics can range from physical layout; Power supply, Processor & I/O cards etc. ~ & connection thereof
Then reading the programme; Ladder logic, function blocks etc. ~ also reading the programme in a live sitution which will then lead to fault diagnosis of the machine (this is probably what you need).
(If you have a good controls background & understand relay logic then ladder logic will be a cinch:confused:) This is generally the requirement as far as maintenance is concerned but the test of knowledge is sometimes asking you to write a basic traffic light programme.:(

Slightly more complicated will be altering a programme. (you will need an understanding of the application of the machine & processes around it).
This where my expertise:rolleyes: drys up!!

Even more complicated will be creating a programme from scratch where-upon you need full application knowledge. (Not recomended for a novice as it may become expensive at the commissioning stage)
I have seen a reasonably experienced guy mash up a prototype body in Land-rover (Corporal Jones springs to mind; Oops I've just given my advancing years away) anyway although not best pleased what could they say; pushing ÂŁ1m bodies through uncommissioned areas of track:eek:

as far as i konw its more a case of altering permaiters for the machines themselves, dont think theres any new installation work regarding the plc's.....this is one area i can't blag without a little knowledge:p

also can anyone recomend a good course to go on regarding plc training, or is it manufacturer specific?

An area that you shouldn't blag...we're talking machine brain-surgery here. I was fortunate to find an AB course at my local college where I studied for the final two of a three year course. I had enough knowledge and experience to skip the first year ;) so the tutor said.

The course was on the AB slc500 using RSLogix 500. AB comes under Rockwell Automation. I'm more Siemens S5/S7 now.

MicroLogix, SLC500 and PLC-5 are classed as PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)- RSLogix500 software and, of course, the RSLinx comms software

CompactLogix, ControlLogix are classed as PACs (Programmable Automation Controllers) -RSLogix5000 (RSL5K) plus RSLinx.

PACs are more complex than PLCs and far more advanced for control algorithms and high-speed processing.

The biggest pain in the hoop with the AB is getting linked up to the plc via RSLinx.

Andy... I'd love to help but be warned, I'm no guru but I'd really do my bestest. Besides I have the S7 bible at my fingertips - 'Step 7 in 7 Steps' amongst all the other clutter dredged up off the net!

My current place is predom. Siemens, with a couple of AB and Keyence knocking about. Lots of Purple String linking between panels and areas plus a little AS-i which I've found myself tinkering with quite often.

Kindest regards
s.f
