Hi
I`ve been working as an electrician part time for past 3 years (mainly domestic). I have recently landed a job wiring up 3phase electrical/hydraulic industrial presses.
I just wondered if I was qualified to do this job. I have domestic installers cert, 2330 level 2 & 3, 16th and 17th ed wiring regs and 2391, but no NVQ.

The company says they are going to send me on some courses to get up to speed but the courses have no recognised qualifications that go with them.

Can anybody answer this query for me please????

You don't have to be qualified to undertake electrical work, you have to be competent. Only you can answer whether or not you're competent.

I'm guessing the courses the company is sending you on are to make sure you know what you're doing, to cover their own backs.

Even though you have lots of qualifications, you are a very lucky man to get a job in which you have no direct experience, I can only assume they are paying a pittance - all the same, stick with it until times get better. Learn what you can and make the most of it so you can then call yourself competent in this type of work.
Best of luck.

Thank you for your quick replies.

I thought it would come down to the competant person thing, and hopefully with them sending me on courses this will be taken care of.

I have been working at this company in a different department while trying to break into electrical full time and they just offered me the job, so yeah I realise how lucky I am as I knoe how hard it is at moment for electrical work, and on decent pay as well.

Thanks again guys
