Thought I gave a mate a decent price today to supply and fit 7 x fire rated ip rated 12v downlights , move a switch, remove a old shower cable move a socket into new partition wall. wire new double socket. new fan to be wired. ÂŁ270 and he just said I was pricey. cheap I thought.

discount for a mate, fine. but do it for free.... no chance. if mate is on his uppers, maybe. what goes round comes round. but some mates take the pee. did it once for a mate who was a motor mechanic. charged for materials and ÂŁ30 for 6 hours as he was a mate. when my van broke down, he wanted ÂŁ100 to tow it in. some mate!!!!!

he has more money and less out goings than me shall we say

Sounds about right. The ones who have the pennies hold on to them to the death, the ones who have little spread it about.

Sadly (it later transpired) I replaced three sockets in an old couples house (like for like), felt pretty crap so charged them a lowish rate as they only live very locally etc. etc..

Anyway, gave me 10 over the odds for doing a nice clean job (was only charging ÂŁ30 to start as they had the sockets, plus a few little "tighten this hinge / door lock screw" type things). In and out in 2 hrs, including the obligatory cuppa and sausage sarnie.

Two weeks later saw them in a local pub, they bought me a couple of drinks ("Thanks lad. On yer own? Join our company!"). They then proceeded to drink me under the table! Profit gone! I'm still wondering how the hell they didn't get their taxi fare home out of me!!!

Mates can be catogorised differently there are those that will do anything for you and you do your best to give them job at cost of materials and a few beers and their are the other kind of mates who think your just worth keeping in the loop for cheap electrics and once you do a cheap job for them it becomes another and another and you soon find your friendship value is only because of your skills....... you only hardly ever see them once in a blue moon and when you do you know they want something...

Im very blunt with those kind of 'friends' and now make it clear i dont have time and dont do domestic or i just shave a small % off full price which usually hits home as they thought id do it for nowt!

I got a morgage and a very ill girlfriend charity is only given to true mates not the other 500 on my FB who want to use my skills with little overall return.

Family is a different story altogether Keep your inheritance happy ;)

and there goes the moral of the story.

If a mate was on his uppers, he wouldn't have the money to spend on fripperies.
Everyones you're mate when they want something. Just tell him to do one!

i have mates like this , dont give you time of day for 5 years until their lights fail , then its free call-out time.
jog on is the phase that comes to mind.

mum , dad , sis & gran are the only ones that get freebies.

I dont do favours to recieve favours but sometimes when I do a cheap/free job for a mate, I would expect the same curtasey from them if I ever need owt doing. I have a few mates that are plumbers, gas engineers and joiners, so owt I do for them, they return in kind, when I need there services. I do feel bad charging me gran & grandad though! I have to fit a couple of wall lights for them next week, only a couple of hours but when me grandad says how much do I owe you, I say nowt, then he slips me a tenner and says get your sen a drink! Tight git.lol
