Evening folks, got my AM2 starting monday. Feeling a bit nervous, but have been studying like mad for a while. Any hints or tips from anyone? Fairly confident with the installation and testing, but fault finding not so much. Any advice appreciated. Cheers J

You already know the technical requirements so just make sure you follow these and also read the specification and install according to the specification.

The fault finding should not be too hard as they are direct and always present faults, so just proceed logically and make sure you understand the controls for the circuits you are testing. e.g. know where switches are and ensure they are on if you are testing the whole circuit. Use observation as well as testing e.g reversed polarity should be visible in the wiring connections as well as showing up on a test.
Short circuits and excessive resistance may not be so visible but an open circuit could well be obvious.

Just done mine so a few more tips to what Richard has put above.

Read the spec, ensure your using the correct cable types and sizes they are asking for. The practical is straight forward you just have to wire it to the spec. Make sure you know how to SWA an SY with the glands. CAT5 install straightforward again just don't forgot the bridge in the dado trunking.

Safe isolation make sure you go through the steps in sequence. Don't forgot to ask for permission to isolate each time also and don't leave the key lying around, keep it in your pocket or the key safe they suggest (hook on the wall).

Test and Inspect. Straight forward again just need to complete the paperwork upon testing, if you a fair bit of test and inspect should breeze it.

Fault finding, think you have to find 5 of the 7 faults for a pass. Again not to taxing. Not allowed to do insulation resistance and all faults will be wiring faults (no faulty accessories)

Final online exam, open book. If you can read you can pass

Good luck

Thanks Richard and pitkin. With the fault finding, how much detail do they want for the rectification? By this, I mean if you find an open circuit on the end to end test of the ring, do you have to say which sockets its between, or can you just say open circuit and check connections? What level of accuracy are they after? Cheers. J
