Hi has anyone heard about the government bringing out a new law where electricians who haven't passed an AM2 exam will no longer be able to work under a competant persons scheme from 2011?

Had to check the date when I read the OP. Thought it was some sort of April fool joke.

If it is true it is just more unneeded government meddling

There are a lot of changes coming in, as from june there will be no more nvq3 so anyone (like me) who never got the nvq3 part wont be able to take it, considering enrolling on one now save any hassle later, so any one got an old log book i can have?

this seems daft as isnt the AM2 just basically used to fill evidence gaps on the NVQ3? then again if the NVQ is to end maybe this is what the goverment are sort of usiing the AM2 as a sort of replacement for people who havent got an NVQ 3.

god knows

not heard anything like that from the gov, the nvq and the 2330 will be combined and an am2 test would be one of the requirements to achieve the nvq. I am off to the elex show tomorrow so i will ask at nic eca etc sure one of their tech guys will know if its a load of old or if it`s true. stranger things have happened with this gov.

I'm quite intrigued about the changes that are coming in, I passed my 2330 last june and have been working happily since, intending to complete my AM2 maybe later this year. A few weeks back I got a letter from my college advising me that if I don't take the AM2 before April I will have no chance of passing it as the entire framework of the course will be different. I've got it booked for the last week of March but as yet nobody seems to be able to clarify exactly what is changing.

the am2 test itself is changing. and also the nvq will be combined with the 2330 maybe leading to (2357) as a joint qualification. where being unlike the 2330 where you could begin the college side of things with the new qualification you wont be able to unless you are in the trade. thereby shutting the door on a lot of people most of all the adult learners. spoke to jtl last week who said they are trying to get the qualification split into two parts to allow such people that are not in the trade at least a door way in. all the funding is changing as well.

Thanks for that Phil, sounds a great shame if the course does indeed become inaccessible to us older folk, I'm 31 and went into the trade after being made redundant and a sparky friend asked me to help him out. I enjoyed it so much more than sitting in an office all day I decided to pay myself through college and retrain.

Seems sad that there will still be funding for all the kids who get on the course with no interest whatsoever in the trade and even less aptitude for it, the young ones at my college were appalling.

I havent taken my NVQ3 yet either so what problems could this cause if they phase it out?

well apparently the new exam is an all in one combining 2330 am2 nvq3 and you must be working in industry to get on course,
the current 2330 quals still stand, however you must enroll on nvq3 course by june as this is the last enrollment before it is closed up.
wether there is an additional part you can add after this onto your 2330 to class you as fully qualified is not yet known although sources are saying it is unlikely.
I didnt do Nvq3 as wasnt too bothered, it seems only really required for Jib, however in retrospect I have just enrolled on Nvq3 now just to save any problems later if I deemed I required it.

get it sorted quick

i was talking to 1 of my nvq assessors and he said apparently if youve got your qualifications a few years ago they wont mean zip towards your nvq

? not sure what he meant by that a tech cert is a tech cert whether it is a 2360 p1 and 2 or the 2330 l2 and 3, shows you have the underpinning knowledge required to claim your competence for the nvq. as long as the boxes are ticked there should not be a problem with claiming it the trouble is too many assessors have different views all within the same college or training centre

i will give you lot the low down , as i have been at college recently doing me 17th.
the am2 is changing to incorporate things like heating controls and solar photo-voltaic systems.
haven't done one myself, i have got technical cert level 3 and nvq level 2. i will prob do the am2 soon. i'm worried about the nvq changing though. that is defo what worries me. i got told the same thing as what matey said, that u should do the nvq before it all kicks off and your quals mean f-all

Your quals will never mean f-all. 2330 will always stand just as 2360 stood when replaced by 2330, employers will still hire the only probs is Nvq3 wont exist and as the syllabus has changed with things like solar/re-newable energys etc and this wasnt part of 2330 then there will need to be some additional training to be able to get the Nvq equivilent to bolt onto 2330 t o class as fully qualified under Jib

so how would you be able to get a JIB gold card without NVQ3 ???

in my opinoin the nvq 3 doesnt seem worth doing at all as long as you do your AM2 you should be able to claim jib card.i have finished doing my nvq 3 last year but cannot afford to pay for the AM2 so will always be classed as electrical improver until then.my college will not claim for the nvq 3 certificate until i do my AM2 either which i think is wrong they say doing the AM2 acts as my third entry for the nvq but ive heard the college wont get the funding from the government til the AM2 is done.i feel like im stuck (catch 22)and its pi**ing me off now.anybody got any advice?anybody know of any funding that might help me out?
