When I worked as a liney for PG&E in 1981,we got a call about a transformer in Baldwin Hills that was belching black smoke,rather than knockout power to about 60 homes I went up in a bucket truck and pulled the dropout fuses off with a death stick,told a young black kid with me.thats a parasite,we'll upsize it from 50 to 100kVA other transformers nearby being 200/200/100 or 200/100 combos,240 volt 4 wire service 13.8kV primary,anbody guess why I called it a parasite transformer also why the dropouts did not blow.

ell my old teacher in the military told me never to have a parochial outlook and American methods at first seemed strange but I will explain,a parasite or stinger transformer wasused in the old days to allow a three phse load,usuall,HVAC to be added to a npormall aingle phase 240volt center tapped neutral transformer the stinger is always the small one,usually in an open delta setup. now of corse most 3 phase setups are 120-208 there.there is a trap with a closed delta too,the top is called the high leg and produces 208 to the neutral saw a bank of computers stuffedup this way when a sparky wondered why in the pael every third slot was vacant and slotted in a breaker,rather than say double tapping two lightly loaded ccts and placing his new cct there.
