If I were to extend circuit cables using a DIN rail enclosure and DIN mounted terminal blocks would the enclosure need to be made of a non combustible material?

The new regulation that comes in to force jan 2016 requires switchgear assemblies including consumer units to have their enclosure manufactured from non-combustible or not readily combustible material or be enclosed in.

So an adaptable box with a DIN rail and DIN rail mounted terminal blocks would not be classed as switch gear.

I agree, but, as we should have all read, this ammendment came about due to London fire brigade being called out to fires started within consumer units because of loose connections on account of shoddy workmanship. As I will be using push-in terminal connectors I won't really have to be to concerned with screw terminations, but perhaps if someone where to use screw terminations then the ammendment should apply, should it not.

Madness really.

Surely it wouldn't matter if it was push-ins or screw terminals - it still isn't classed as switchgear is it? Daz

I was told by a Wylex rep the other that only an enclosure with fuses/mcbs is require to be non combustible. So say an upfront enclosure with main switch or RCD doesn't need to be non combustible

Seems strange that they don't class an RCD or an isolator as switchgear. Can't see the reason for differentiation between RCD and MCB. Daz

... so, anywhere where there may be a screw loose ... ! ;oP

Of course an RCD in its own enclosure is included in this new regulation within domestic premises. 421.1.201 states consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies. As for an adaptable box with din rail connectors whether MF terminals or screw terminals its not classed as a consumer unit or switchgear so clearly doesn't have to be made of "non combustible material", Being realistic it's a big junction box and nothing else! Next you will be saying we need metal junction boxes for downlights lol.

If,by "They",you are referring to Wylex, the research the rep will draw on ,will be sales based...ie; who speaks to me,when i call...

You CAN speak to Wylex technical...but that will be a different contact number altogether :icon12:
