Hi all this is my frist post on this forum. Iam being made reduntant soon :( after 15 years as a on the books sparky and was thinking about seting my self up as a sole trader. I was hopeing that you coulde give my some does and donts many thanks.

don't try and run before you can walk. start off small and build up. ads in paper shop, local rag etc. beware of companies selling advertising space in charity mags that nobody reads, try getting leaflets printed and deliver to local homes. stress that you are local, it's bloody hard, but worth it as long as you can get the work. don't underprice yourself, you gotta charge about £30-£35 per hour. start off with a cheap van/estate car, or even your present motor, and FFS get public liability insurance.

takes time mate, i set up in london last year but now im getting lots of repeat work.if u do a good job 4 a fair price ull be fine. but i dont know if there is much going in ur area.in london im still popping 200 a day in these hard times

Starting up is expensive.....van, test gear, scheme affiliations, insurances etc etc.

Dont be afriad to say no, that is the downfall of many new start ups, taking on too much work and not having time to do it all. People would rather you say no or sorry I cant do it for at least 2 months rather than agree to do it tomorrow and let them down by not showing up.

Good news travels fast, bad news travels faster!!
