Hi guys can anyone recommend a source for analysing the BS1363 power plug? i need to know the design considerations like contact resistance, heat and many other factors. I looked through the BSI standard but can't find anything helpful to me.
I appreciate any helps from you guys.
Thanks!!

Im an undergraduate student doing some researches and need some informations on the methodology of the design of the power plug.

hi all, i think is my bad for those unclear statements. I am a undergraduate student from newscastle uni and this is one of my research project on analysing the BS1363 due to its copper-intensive characteristics. I need to know what to consider when designing a new power plug. I searched through quite a lot of journals and none of them mentioned about the BS1363, thus i, appreciate any help from members from this forum. thanks.

I think your screen name is quite appropriate mate. 1363 has been with us for a very long time and has proven to be A effective and B safe so redesigning it to fix something that is definitely not broken is going to be a big task.
You'll need shutters on the socket and a longer earth pin to operate them.
Maybe you'd be better off taking a look at the Fatally Flawed thread and lending your research talents to that.
Sorry for raining on your parade

That's the same as iffy is it not? lol

Definition of nefarious in English:

Adjective
(Typically of an action or activity) wicked activity or criminal: the nefarious activities of the organized-crime syndicates

More example sentences
All this does is make celebrities out of these crooks and encourages them to continue with their nefarious activities.
I don't know if this was because she was just trying to be unobtrusive, or if she thought we were up to some nefarious activity.

Origin
early 17th century: from Latin nefarius, from nefas, nefar- 'wrong' (from ne- 'not' + fas 'divine law') + -ous.

Your location is given as Singapore now you say you’re at Newcastle university?

What I’m finding strange is Singapore’s plugs and sockets are BS1363 along with 230V 50Hz as standard. I’m fairly sure your standards are based on BS7671.

If this is a research project I would suggest you buy some plugs and sockets from an electrical shop in Newcastle. Measuring contact pressure and resistance it relatively simple in a laboratory. Dimensions are a simple matter of measurement.

I’m sorry but BS1363 plugs and sockets have served us well since 1934 with only a minor alteration in 1950. We tend to be very defensive of them as it is recognised as one of the safest systems in the world.

80 years in service, how are you going to improve on them? Cutting corners and lowering standards is about the only way to make them more financially attractive. It won’t make you popular around here.

Follow Trev’s advise, find something that does need improving, don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken.

Both Trev and I support this web site Fatally Flawed. It emphasizes the safety of the BS1363 system.

British Standards are based around SAFETY, so if you start your methodology at that point and expand from there. And if you don't think anyone is daft enough to do something then think again. Metal knitting needle into live side of switched on socket to see what would happen. He is still alive. ( A friend at Boarding School because he was bored)

You need to consider the millions of buildings filled with bs1363 sockets at the moment.
Nobody will buy a new design of plug because all of their sockets will be BS1363.
