Hi all, just been asked to test about 150 items before Christmas, what I can remember there is a lot of 415v 16A red commando extentions.
Now I know there's not many 1000v tester out there if any ...
But do I do three seperate tests per phase or just one all joined together with a made up lead...

and if three tests.... do you charge them for 3 seperate tests?:dizzy2:

Use a Multi Function Tester with a made up adapter for the 415 V leads, and to do the earth bonding tests with a clip and a probe to the case, just don't do a bonding test on any CNC equipment....you may need to open the case to get access to terminals on the back of some machinery...

I know it's after christmas now but here's my 10p worth.

I would test each phase seperately becaause you could probaly acheive that without buying ant extra adapters etc. You can also use that 200mA bond test on any IT equipment , which CNC machines would be classed as to me. As for charging them 3 times for a 3 phase device - I don't think I would. I'd probably adjust the charge up a bit given the amount of extra time you'd need to do the testing.

cheers,

Steve

Thanks both, I was going to up the charge a little until the owner said could I make up some 110v ext, and I will pay you by the hour. Did three tests and on 200mA for units with dig control..... still boring though, only one there over xmas.

Make an adaptor. Take one 415v big red socket, solder all the line pins together, and bung a standard 13a plug top on the other end, job done, then just test in the normal way.
There are no special requirements for 3 phase kit, and the test voltage is the same as for single phase "500V".

Do your earth bond as you normally would.

Cheers..........Howard

To make this adaptor even safer, common all the line pins and the neutral pin in the 415V socket, and then only connect the neutral from the 13A plug to them.
Do not connect the 13A line pin to anything.
Connect the 13A earth pin to 415V socket earth pin as normal.

That way, the adaptor is utterly useless for anything other than earth bond and insulation resistance tests, which is all a PAT tester can perform on 415V kit anyway.
If anyone tries to use it to power 415V kit off a 13A supply, it will do nothing.

Okay that makes sence, and might even get some brownie points with Napit inspector ...:biggrin5:
