If I am to carry out the insulationresistance testing of the electrical installation in the shower block.
a. What are the precautions that will need to betaken with regards to persons and equipment before carrying out the test are:

b. what is the test voltage to be applied andthe minimum acceptable insulation resistance value to comply with the BS7671 is

Paul

I am assuming you are studying 2330, instead of just posting the questions and we do your homework, why not put your answers down and ask for confirmation. This way, you will get a lot more people willing to help as you are making the effort too!!.

Agree with wally here, this is basic level testing for a qualified sparky so assume its homework, been spoonfed answers may get you a pass but wont teach you how to be competent and use correct pocedures in the big world... as wally says feed us your thoughts on what you think is right and why then will confirm or correct you as this shows us your trying to do it yourself and only need a nudge in right direction or thumbs up for a correct assumption.

a- Make sure there is no one in the shower when you turn the power off or you may get a thumping.

yes i take on board what you saying.

here goes.

a. as i will be powering of equipment, make sure they no one using anything electrical in the shower block, then inform anyoen that may need to use anything in the shower block. then isolate the power to all circuits to the shower block. Lock off and place warning signs on the circuits to prevent accidently or anyone switching on.

b. we use a ohm meter or a multimeter with this function. the test voltage to be applied is 500v and the minimum value to comply is 1.0 m ohms

Pretty good answer, dont forget that all showers must be disconnected before doing the IR test to prevent damaging them.

Also, any neons in shower switches to be removed

If disconnecting the shower or neons is impractical, IR test 2 can be used... Worth looking up how it works if you don't already know.

NO. you use an insulation resistance tester, or a mulifunction tester with this founction

If its the womens shower i find it sometimes accceptable to forget to inform of your intentions has many more benefits than risks . ....well if you can run fast enough ;)

besrt way then is to find a way of turning off the heat, but not the ice-cold water.

You will receive Nill points for that one

It should read:

Insulation Resistance tester set to 500V DC and the minimum value that should be accepted without further investigation is >2.0 M Ohms, although 1.0 M Ohms is stated in BS7671.

The 2 meg reading is a figure that if the whole installation is tested in one go further investigation should take place.
By testing individual circuits to find the offending circuit.
