I set up on my own 3 years ago and joined the NIC after doing my 2391 and 17th,it has been a struggle of late with the work being as it is and i have reached a crossroads.

I can either sit tight and hope the work picks up or i have been offered a job by a larger company as their qaulified supervisor who deals with all the testing and NIC certification has retired ,they have offered me this job.

The problem is i think i would find it hard going back to working for another firm after having the freedom that being self employed brings, the company have even said they will give my apprentice a job too.

Should i put my family and bills first or ride it out .any advice welcomed.:(

The question is, "How long do you want to wait?" I don't expect things to pick up for at least another couple of years. Difficult one this, but I would take the job and keep your business on the side, monitor the market and as soon as you think it's time to head out on your own again then hand in your notice.... There are a lot of sparks out there looking for work!

Yes i know what your saying, the guy who owns the other firm is a freind of mine and has offered me 30k.

Its garuanteed money but its stuck in the office all the time apart from the odd site visit, like you say its a tough one.

Thing is this year in the last five months i have only cleared after tax 9k which is half what it was this time last year,my wife dont work i got 2 small kids and a small mortgage.

I am allso losing the hunger for it,you know, working all day,out quoting at night working the odd weekend,i sometimes think it would be nice to go to work and come home and forget about it.

personally id go work for someone as your guarenteed 30k a year which going by your current earnings you are trebeling

and as you say you can come home and forget about the job no quoteing etc

you could always keep your business for weekends etc and also someting to fall back on if you dont like working for someone or for when it picks up again

and if you dont take it il have the job lol

Maybe i wasnt clear in my OP Ian,9k is what i have cleared after tax from may till now,if work continues at the rate im getting it at the moment i should earn 20k after tax but thats dependant on the situation not getting any worse.

We was alll ok till the american banks started to fold, bloody yanks.lol

I reckon try to stick it out as best you can. 30k pre tax won't be that much better than 20K after tax, maybe 3K of a difference, and as you say being your own boss gives you a feeling of independence ( rightly or wrongly).:)

I done a quick calculation and this is what you would take home after tax: ÂŁ22,623.65

the choice is yours.:)

Just summit to think about, although what JonAW is saying sounds about right, "20K after tax" is what you MIGHT earn, ASSUMING you keep your current work load.

In times like this, and with 2 little'uns, thats a fairly risky assumption. Id take the job mate, doesnt mean its the end of your business, just time away from it, with GUARANTEED MONEY.

All the best

You have to take in holiday pay and bank holidays etc..

Id take the job, keep your business running-give it until christmas atleast. Any extra work on weekends is a bonus

Only you can decide what to do, personally id take the job, keep the business as a sideline till things pick up, when youv'e got a family to support you have to put them first, but thats just me
all the best m8

WOuld you not be able to go in at 3 days a week while you finish off oustanding work and pro rata the 30k then see how it goes after 3 months I have a colleague who has a 9-5 and runs another business he uses holiday, lieu time (his employer stopped overtime 2 years ago!) evenings and subs alot of the work out gets to pick and choose the juicy jobs with decent profit and passes the rest on to his grateful subbies to keep them ticking over till he needs them. Its great if you can get it!
