just looked at a job which was for a possible rcbo change to bring bathroom up to spec after some work was done there.

this is one of my first jobs since being qualified, so want to start off on the right foot.

old cu is about 10yrs old, crabtree mcb type, 2 spare ways, not RCD protected(just main switch), hence using RCBO for bathroom.
Im sure i am right in saying This has to be done as im altering what is already in the bathroom???

On taking off cover of CU , no busbar guard, 3 shared ccts including lighting cct for upstairs which supplys the bathroom.

Where do i go from here?

I reccomended a new board as not enough room to split the shared ccts(also shared ccts are not a good idea), and thats what would make sense, but from a customers point of view its money thay have not budgeted for?

I have not done any work at the house yet and the only change to the new bathroom suite is a new light electrical wise(which is what i have been asked to do). All bonding is up to scratch, just tails are 16mm from henley block.

Also an old storage heater board and meter are still in place. (no ccts just live tails to it)
Can i remove this or should DNO remove it?

Im sure i will come across alot of this in the future so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

Make sure your work is 100%, report any other deviances on your test certificate along with recommendations, unless the fault is a dangerous one, in which case isolate the danger and report it to the owner.

so, by removing the two ccts and placing the upstairs into an rcbo would then mean finding out what the other cct fed and would then req its own mcb?

then test both ccts and record all other stuff on test cert?

is this ok to do?

or should i stick to guns and advise for new CU?

Before you dive in and replace C.U. I would carry IR test of entire installation, you may find additional faults ( shared N ( especially on landing 2 way ) issue a report and let the client make the decision on how best to proceed.

sounds like a good idea, so just upgrading initial light cct with rcbo not good enough?(as previous post)?

like i said, where do u draw the line with work to be done?

this job is escalating from a simple light change in the bathroom to a possible CU change?

And more expensive to customer. Job could turn out to be a nightmare however, dont want to turn down work and this could affect future work with guy who offered me job in the first place?

should i just split light cct, taking the upstairs feed into the new rcbo (or the feed with bathroom in)and fill out a minor works cert and test only for cct that im touching. note all deviances on part 2 regarding what else is wrong on minor works cert and job is sorted?
the customer can then decide what he wants to do. I can explain this prior to any work carried out and give him the choice?

any pointers???

?
