I have a customer that tells me he can give me more work if i go NICEIC, I dont want to (dont ask, its a grumpy old man thing :) ), waht can a NICEIC sparky offer me in the way of services -

Can he/she come and test my installation and fully certify??

Do they need to visit several times during installation i.e. first fix 2nd fix etc??

I just want my installation legitimately tested and certified for the customer :rolleyes:

Any ideas folks??

Tom :)

someone from the nic could sign off your work but i bet you they wouldnt as they are responsible for your work

the other way is labc but that would be expensive

i would not sign off any of my mates works at all, so there would be no way i would ever do it for someone i did not know. and then there is the old paper trail when answering to the tax man as to 50 + rewires.. "honest mr hmrc" i only signed it off. there are people who will do it for you but most won`t.

Ok, the thing i want is to keep customer happy, I am not trying to aviod anything except joining NIC, if i completed job and customer called an NIC guy in to test - whats the diffrerence?? I understand that guys Join NIC and need to earn a crust and i am happy to put testing their way and want my work to certified for customers sake, not mine, i am happy with my standards :)

Really appreciate the feedback guys, keep it coming :)

Tom

You can do the work and then get another electrician to provide a certificate, but it will be a periodic inspection report that should be supplied. A third party firm should not commission your work, as BS7671 requires for you to commission your work yourself.

Regarding work that is notifiable under part p, you need to either join a scheme provider yourself, or notify labc prior to commencement of work.. Any company that is willing to notify another companies work really need to understand what the risks are involved.
I won't however say that it must be done as I myself have been in such a position, and discovered that I could after quite a few discussions with the labc of that area..

I disagree Widdler. I don't agree that you should carry out the work and then get another electrician to provide a certificate with a view to simply providing a periodic inspection report.

Sounds like a very sloppy way of going about it.

Agree. A Periodic Inspection Report for an Electrical Installation is not intended to certify installation work. It is simply a report on the existing installation.

Is your client referring to notifiable work ?
Is he wanting you to self certify through NIC perhaps ?
Are you doing notifiable work now thru local labc ?

Difficult to say what he is barking at without knowing a little more about him. Is he a landlord with several properties ?
If so I could see where he was coming from (though like you, not necessarily agree)
