I don't suppose any of you chaps live on a narrow boat? I'm a bit fed up in a conventional house.. mortgage, neighbours etc etc and am seriously looking at living on a narrow boat!

I already know quite a bit about it, mooring costs, licence, blacking etc but it would be much better to speak to someone who has actually done/doing it, especially about where you keep all your tools, van etc.

I'll be amazed if somebody replies saying that they do but thought I'd ask!

Cheers guys :smiley2:

thought about it once. when i lived in a converted double decker bus. had a lock-up garage next to the bus. was fine until i stayed at my lady's for a month and returned to find that the pikeys had broken open the garage, nicked everything, and stripped all the aluminium from the bus. ÂŁ5,000 worth gone to scrap. left me with just the clothes i was wearing and my hand tools, which were with me in the van.

Hey Happy hippy dad: Yep. From '97 to '07 (ish... in and out for a year or so at the end). For the most part, loved it. Very different way of living. Moved into a house as my sweetheart had too many shoes...

Kept a "messing about in" boat until this summer - a 30" Zeeschouw.

What do you wanna know? :)

Telectrix: sh!t, man, that sounds heartbreaking.

Well that is a suprise!! :smile5:
Didn't really think anyone would come back with a 'yes'!
Not too sure where to start now??
Tell me a bit about it Steve? I've got hundreds of questions....

Where did you store your tools/stock? Where did you park your van? Where did you store your wood? Was it vastly cheaper than a house? Did you have a live on mooring or coast around? Did you feel like you were part of a community or was it lonely? Did you have any pets (I have 2 cats), was that a problem if you did? How did you pay for the boat (sell a house, loan, savings)? Do you miss it?

Thats just a few questions without really thinking. I'm heading down to sharpness marina very soon to have a bit of a look around and a chat with some boat owners, I intend to get as much info as possible being jumping into it!

Ps.. just noticed your a lecturer and live in Nottingham! I did my PGCE (maths) at Nottingham University, now that would be a coincidence if that's a course you taught!?

That's a small boat!

Dunno, she was quite beamy. "De Sperwer" (Sparrowhawk). Wasn't a boat I lived on, just dossed about on. 40' narrowboat (with 22' cabin) - my first floating home - now THAT's a small boat!

Happy Hippy... I'll message you. :)

"Beamy" or not, 30" seems small for a boat - I used to build 40' motorboats with a TV wider than that (32").

I sometimes feel like I'm living on a sinking ship.

Knock knock ..

Who's there?

Mandy ..Mandy who??

Man de lifeboats - de ship she is sinking man !!
