In the flat i live in i have an extractor fan in the kitchen that is fed by a 1.0mm2 3core FT&E. The supply comes a fused connection unit off the RFC. The extractor has L SL N CPC. The switched live is terminated on the
load side of the FCU, as is the Neutral. The permanent live is terminated in the supply side of the FCU with the 2 RFC lines.

I have not seen it done like this before and am just curious if anyone else has. Obviously switching the FCU off does not isolate the fan from the Permanent Live.

Does the fact that the fan is a fixed load mean the permanent live only needs fault protection, as it is technically "protected" by the 32A Type B 60898?

The switched live is protected by the 5A fuse in the FCU.

It does sound a bit wierd to be honest cant say I have ever seen it but the perm live in the supply side with the 2 2.5 twin and cpc is against the regs as it says somewhere in the regs (I will look for the reg number later) that if you reduce the size of the conductor in the circuit it needs to be fused down accordingly so it seems against the regs, I know it is a fixed load so wont pull enough but yet 32 amps could go through the teminal with the 2 2.5s and the 1mm in it which could burn out the 1mm

This is why i am not keen on having the housing associations "Engineers" as they like to call them do anything in my flat.

The fan is due to be replaced as it is knackered. I don't see why it needs a 3 core anyway, as it does not need to run on.

I suppose having a fan with just switched live and neutral and tying the 3rd core to earth would solve the problem nice and simply then.

Had the fan changed today and explained to the spark about the way it had been wired. So the new fan is now just Switched line & neutral. I said to him about earthing the unused core and he said, you aren't allowed and that it needs to be in a chock block floating in the back of the FCU box.

I think he is wrong personally.
