I believe the BS for them is BS 842 ( I think ), however, Bs 4293 was the equivelent old number for a modern RCd

Whoever fitted it then wasn't too concerend about it working .................I see or are you using it just as an isolator.

Exactly......in the title the OP says it's a 500mA rated one so that's current operated surely??? no earth connection required.....

Probably just as well then Lenny as there is no earth conductor in the proprty , no earth rod and I dont see evidence of one ever being installed but there is a nice new smart meter installed about two years ago , just as well the proprty is empty !

Well Lenny I think you should get the 10 points. I was going down the lines of the above bad boy and thinknig it was a voltage operated unit, and thought that the OP was thinking 100ma rather than 500mA and so a Typo

But your right the current operated ELCB never needed an earth connection as it worked like the modern RCD on LINE/NEUTRAL inbalance.

The old voltage ELCB needed an earth connection to it as it sensed a rise in voltage on the earth conductor.

I did have to read & look at it look twice to make sure it wasn't a typo too.

I dont recall ever having seen and old looking ELCB like that one, only ever VOELCB's.

The manufacturer of most of the old current operated elcbs were Chiltern, they were once widely used, they were the bees knees at one time
