Hey Guys,

Few questions really, just need some advice and direction if possible, i welcome anyones views and opinions...

Firstly, im 22 and been in the electrical trade since i was 16. Basically i have my City and guilds 2330 Level 3 (electrical technical technology) basically electrical installations.. I am soon to undergo my 17th Edition update exam. Can someone please tell me, what i am classed as with these qualifications?

Also, i am looking to become Part P, has anyone got any advice on what route i could take with this, as in what to do next etc. Do i need my AM2 to become fully qualified? Is it needed to go through my part p course?

I am looking to somehow become part p qualified so i can undertake and sign off work in domestic properties, also need to know about any recognised bodeis such as NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA etc, which one is best to go with?

My plans are, to get a van and start working for myself, which i am doing now except i work from my car, i need the best advice in what route to follow to help further my career and become as successful as possible, all advice welcome..

Thanks guys.

Think the best thing you can do to start of with is contact the small business advisory service this is a free course and will deal with everything from tax to marketing. Pop into your bank and ask about starting up a business acct that should get you the free software to draw up a business plan and you can decide on the course if you want to be Ltd or not.

Part P is joining a competent person scheme for this you will need two jobs at different addresses but close by they will come along and assess you including a desktop review so all your paperwork must be in order but they will tell you whats needed when you apply. As to which one it depends what you are after they all have their little quirks.

Good luck

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the useful advice, I'l be doing my 17th edition course soon i hope then take it from there?

Roughly how much is it to set up with a competent person scheme and what quirks do you mean? are you with any electrical bodies? Would you recomend me doing my AM2? or is it not worth doing?

Cheers pal,

Tim

Best thing to do is contact the scheme providers. From other threads Ive read that having passed the 2391 which is valid for life napit expect you to take their test every five years. So best to get the enrolement pack from each of them then ask on the forum about the scheme that interests you most. Once you have decided they will advise if AM2 etc is required for your career path.

Dont do it go into basket weaving far easier ,well im with elecsa i would recomend you do the 2391 inspection and testing problems you will have especially being self employed is the lack of experiance with the fault finding having done 6 years you should have gained a fare amount but do the 2391

Good luck

i second the 2391 exam!! :)

as for jobs that need to be assessed Elecsa only require you to do one job! Consumer unit change and beyond.. some thing that involves replacing/fitting equipment and carrying out full tests in line with 7671

every spark had there preference on scheme providers and each to there own, Obviously Nic is the front runner due to the massive history and notbly its high profile image, but dont be sucked in to that as it preforms exactly the same job as the others you mentioned Elecsa, Napit, Elecsa been the second biggest and growing fast since its acquisition by the ECA,

cant comment on napit as never had any dealing..!

truthfully speaking i dont think it will be long before one scheme purchases napit and makes it a two horse race before the government intervenes and creates the electric safe register to put us on par with the gas!

if you can do your AM2 i would do it as its another tick in the box,

scheme providers normally start at ÂŁ435 per year.
