Apprentice help!

Long time reader 1st time poster as i dont have a clue what i am doing on here! this is probably in the wrong area so i apologise for that, anyway on with my question!

I put my son through his apprenticeship and he finished it in january, NVQ level 3 in electrotechnical installation, only took him 3 years which isnt bad! Completed his am2 with flying colors (i hate a smart arse!) Anyway we are going through the process of looking at inspection and testing but its changed from the 2391 and its got us slightly confused! When going through his list of certificates he has a level 3 module of inspection, testing and commissioning. Does this mean he can test and commission his own work or is the new two part inspection and testing course required! i just find it hard to believe that after a 3/4 year long apprenticeship he is deemed less competant than a bloke who does a week long part p course who can commission his own work!


Any guidence or help would be greatly appreciated

with the qualifications he has got he can test and commission his own work 2391 would be required if he was doing eicr good to have tho

eicr is that the new electrical installation conditioning reports? The periodic replacement?

NO IT WOULDNT!!....competency is what would be required.....

Rubbish You don't need 2391 to do a condition report
depends what your son wants to do?
i.e domestic on his own go with scheme provider I.e niceic, napit etc
Good for him hes done the best route possible in my opinion
personally go with a company for a year or two to gain more knowledge

ok so dont need 2391 but imo you should seen so many joke eicrs its unbelievable latest one tt system 3x 16mm t & e sub mains fed by 100 amp metal clad switch fuses with 100 amp fuses fitted no rcd protection. consumer unit feeding toilet block not an rcd in sight and guy who did last inspection issued a satisfactory report?

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Your son can and should be testing & certifying his own work. However, completing his apprenticeship (for which, well done) is not the end of the road in terms of gaining experience and competance.

I would recommend that he does progress and study/sit the C&G 2394 & 5 (which replaces the 2391) as you can never be too qualified in today's employment climate; lots of other interesting stuff too re fire detection, emergency lighting etc.
