Hi all

im very new to all this and looking for some help and guidence. how do i go about getting onto an aprentership in the north of england ? i am new to all this looking for jobs etc as i joined the army straight from school and spent 10 years in. now im wanting to train to become an electrition. any advice tips for cources will be of help and any offers of training too.

i have read some thereads and to be honest it is mind bogling me lol

thanks andy

My advice and I hope you beleive me is not to bother honestly.
This trade has been ruined by people sat in offices creating needless qualifications when their are know electricians mate jobs or apprentiships especialy if your past 30.

Please read some more of the posts on this site, would someone complete a list of the new requirements to become an electrician including a rough price list.

Also before you decide look into what employers require and pay.
You will spend your life in and out of training centres updating new regulations that are just introduced to cash in the fact that it is a dangerous industry.

Oh and also after learning the regulations and legal requirements of your trade if anything goes wrong and your in court, your basicly on your own as the regulations are only a guide not legaly binding

are you still in the army? if so try and re-cap badge, join the engineers as an electrician.

i have done my time in the army and want a more stable lifestyle ie not going to a war zone every 6 months or so and well i want to better myself by becomeing a sparkey i have considered that option but i think 10 years serving queen and country is long enough.

fair enough, was just an option that most dismiss as it often takes a long time to re-cap badge(about 1 year), it takes a long time to train as an engineer elec (2.5 years untill time served) and then there will be a 2 year retention from when you are trained. 5.5yrs does seem like a long time now, but realistically you won't do it much quicker in civvy street start to finish unless you luckily walk out of the army and into an electrical company that give you an apprenticeship immediately(very unlikely). apprenticeships for people your age are like hens teeth.
have you actually left, or have you just signed of, or are you doing resettlement now? if you havent done resettlement yet i'd reccomend you do all the possible electrical courses from RTC aldershot as they are as cheap as you can possibly get, well equipped and well taught courses. and then with the above courses you will be above the rest of the pack applying for a job as an electricians mate which is where you need to start really.
also don't bother with fast track courses like train4tradeskills. you will get laughed at when applying for a job if when asked "where did you serve your time" you respond with "i did a fast track course, i have no proper experience"...
