Just wondered how many of you have ended up in hospital with Arc-Eye (Irritation to the eye from UV damage) mostly related to been near welders without eye protection, got my first experience about 25yrs ago and although I wasn't in direct eye line of any welder, I suffered from reflections off the corragated tin roof I was hanging lights off ... if you ever had it then you will appreciate what having hot needles thrust into your eyes must be like :willy_nilly:

I've had it a few times, usually from my own welding rather than someone elses. Usually it was when I was make something as a prototype so I'd make a couple of tacks with the welder then take the job elsewhere to measure of fit something then go back and weld another couple of tacks. Needless to sat I was just too lazy to put on the welding helmet and keep taking it off again. I remember one of the times was quite bad, it felt like a handful of powdered glass had been thrown in my eyes and they were streaming with tears all night. I didn't sleep a wink. We keep some anesthetic eye drops in the workshop first aid post but they have a short shelf life so they're not always viable.

The thing with welders flash is it usually doesn't effect you till you hit the pillow which makes it all the more confusing until the nurse asks you if you been welding lol

Never had it bad enough for hospital treatment.

Have woken up a couple of times with what I can only describe as sand being stuck under my eyelids.

I think I had it once I'm not sure. Eyes were weeping snotty goo and itchy as hell. It was either from driving through an industrial estate where a welder was working on a big frame in his yard with no screens, or working over the top of a hot caustic bath in a small foundry the same day.

Had it once as an apprentice. I had been sitting in the divide between 2 welding bays talking to some other lads while my workmate was welding.
Hit me in the middle of the night like someone had chucked red hot iron filings in them. My Dad found me rolling about on the kitchen floor and said "tha's got arc-eye". A combination of cold wet tea bags and milk provided temporary relief until I could get to the chemists in the morning.

Had it a couple of times stick welding in the time before see through masks (tacking up intricate parts etc) Felt like sand in your eyes .Now its easy as the masks dont go dark until you arc up.
Did have a big red spot on my chest recently (tig welding with jacket open and a hole in my tee shirt)
