Hi all,
A customer has asked me to have a look at the new light and sockets he has put into the garage (attached to his house), and wants to know if I can sign them off for him.
He knows that I'm just qualified and says he is happy to wait until I'm signed off (if the price is right, I guess).
He says all cabling is visible, so if all seems compliant with the regs and subject to testing, it should be possible.

Because two circuits have been changed, does this mean I need to
1) issue two minor works certificates and just test the circuits concerned
2) issue an installation certificate and test all circuits?

Just to complicate things, I haven't yet committed myself to either the NIC or NAPITT and they might have different ways of dealing with it.

I'm also double checking the regs as I believe he has taken spurs off the CU for these circuits additions, which memory tells me should be okay, although I might play safe and put in a FCU to the socket.

Apologies if it seems a bit trivial - I just want to make sure I get it right.

You can't legally sign off anyone else's work. These are notifiable works.
I agree, rugbynick. Two factors which might make it different though are firstly, I would be notifying building control through whichever organisation I join. Secondly, I'd be doing all the testing and inspection of this piece of work, but only if everything was visible. From that point of view, it would be like the guy who had installed it was like a 'wire puller' for my work. Of course I wouldn't sign it off if I hadn't verified all was up to standard. What do you think of that?

If you're just starting out and you are keen to have a reputation for signing off other peoples and DIYers work for the right fee, then carry on. They know and you know it's illegal against pP (you have read the approved document, haven't you?).

Personally, I won't touch other peoples work for sign off. MY customers know this and the number of calls I get for this purpose fell off quite quickly during my first couple of years and I get virtually none now.

Customer come to me now because they know everything will be done properly and above board. Totally honest, nothing dodgy, no 2nd hand bits off ebay, no dodgy fake cable.

Which way you wish to proceed with your business is up to you.
