Glennsparks thread about his van getting robbed got me thinking.
Are our addresses stored on this site? I can't even remember if I had to give my address to join.

What worries me is the fact that on many occasions we sit in here comparing what tools we have got or just bought, we even declare what models and makes of testers we own etc.
We also declare what vans we own and what security we have fitted, couple that with the electricians directory that we all fill in giving our company names that must be easy enough to find on yell etc.

Have I got a point or am I just being paranoid after Glenn's post.
Ps I spoke to Glenn last night before going to bed, and it has knocked his duck off naturally but god help em if he gets hold of them.

Cheers pal, it just got me thinking about how people could read all the stuff we talk about, it reminded me of someone I know announcing on face book when they were going on holiday only to return to find they had been burgled!!

It's like anything to do with the internet - if you don't want it known, don't make it public. Many peoples profiles have links back to websites, websites have contact details and so on. Where I am, I try to keep as low a profile as possible due to the enormous number of pikeys that patrol around looking for any opportunity they can.

Yes Mate but It's a crying shame when you can't be proud of what You've got or achieved, without some low life scroat seeing the opportunity to make a quick buck.
I agree with an earlier post about adopting Saudi law, where if you get caught stealing then Bye Bye Hand

No addresses are stored on this site only email addresses which can only be seen by staff.
That's fine and I have no qualms whatsoever that a forum like this would not ever release such information.
But I have experience from another forum where someone claimed to have tracked be down.
It was initiated by a claim by that someone about his superior knowledge of electrics that I disagreed with in a civil manner and gave my reasons why. The long and the short is that it made him look altogether silly especially after his vitriolic tirades against me. That resentment has obviously been a festering sore for at least a couple of years. And I have, in internet terms, been stalked by him. On two other forums. Same really ugly stuff.

Earlier this year, he claimed to have tracked me down to a specific address and published a picture of a house he asserted was mine, my name and the assertion that I am a plumber. This he claimed he was able to do from my IP address and with 192.com.

As it happens, he got it wrong on all counts. But it does demonstrate the lengths some nutters will go to.

I'm too old to get in a tizz about it but I mention it as a precautionary tale.

It’s the same elsewhere.

Something for you to think about though. Your web sites, are they being targeted?

Good morning/Afternoon Tony

It's just life, you can take the usual precautions against theft but you can't keep the location or contact details of a business secret otherwise customers can't find you. If you run a legitimate business you'll always be traceable, there's nothing you can do about that. The site doesn't store any address or phone number details unless you've posted them in a thread somewhere for all to see. The only way someone could track your location via the forum is if they have access to your ipaddress (which is forum staff only) and then they subpoena your ISP through the courts for your account details.

Any clown knows that sparks will be carrying an amount of copper and some pretty, not to mention pricey, tools in their vans. I suppose that someone somewhere will have googled electricians in their area and come up with a list of addresses with the intention of hitting them all over a period of time. No doubt our less intelligent brethren the pipe monkeys have had/could have similar problems

It either that or I'm getting as paranoid as you Glenn or I'm crediting the lowlifes with more common sense than they have
