Double-tiered question:

Are you a member of any institutions? I'm contemplating joining these guys:
The Institution of Engineering and Technology - The IETIs there much benefit to it? I believe my company will pay my membership so no reason not to join but interested in what people have to say.

Also, anyone a member of trade union? I imagine a lot on here are self-employed but perhaps a few techies/engineers who work in industry?

I'm a full member of the IET - MIET. It gives me (as I've seen over the past few days) between ÂŁ10 and ÂŁ28 discount on the regs and other publications. The annual sub is more than that of course but there are others benefits (see the website). Be aware that you can't use the IET logo on your advertising etc.; you can only use the letters after your name. This is a bit of a shame. I think the IET is missing a trick here - no wonder engineering is not held in high regard by youngsters; they associate it with industrial revolution imagery.

As a past member and senior convenor of the EETPU I personally will have nothing to do with unions now.

The EETPU was ruined the day they took the AEU under their wing. At conference I suggested the union should be the AFU (Any F*ckers Union) it didn’t go down to well. I resigned there and then! Never been a member of any union since.

If any of you get the chance to go to the union collage at Esher Place, have a look in the library you will find the minute books for 57 to 66 filed under “Fiction”

Eric Hammond was a great guy, for him self. In the back pocket of all the big companies. He sold us down the river!

Sod unions they only want to sell you insurance now!
