hi everyone first message on here, im sure it is simple to mst people,i need to know if the outer metal strands on an armoured cable MUST be earthed. it is from the board to a garage at the bottom of the garden and the earth is run in the black cable, neutral in grey and live in brown or red cant remember

the armour must be earthed at the source,as it is an exposed conductive part.whether it is used as earth for the installation it supplies is another matter

thankyou for your reply.so it can be earthed from the garage end as it has been stripped back at the source end to fit it into trunking

im sorry i know it sounds dumb i currently do electrical work and was taught by someone who also was not qualified i am currently saving to go for my qaulifications, the reason i asked is that the electricians that where there before did not do that i thought you had to but had to be sure as it is important to be safe

If the shared neutral is lost ,won`t you be getting 400v across both cottages? 2 phase US style but double the Voltage.
