Welchyboy

anybody put my mind at rest?? a friend has just been on the Asbetos awareness course and it has scared the hell out of him and he now is convinced he is going to die

we was chatting about how many downlighters we have drilled into artex ceilings etc over the years and the fact that i wasnt too concerned as apparently its very low grade and doesnt really pose a great deal of danger, this used to be his opinion too until however he done the course, now he has convinced me chances are im probably gonna cop it too, most of the time i wear a basic dust mask when chasing/drilling but i know these are far from perfect

i was allways of the mind its blue and brown to look out for, and cement based asbestos is not really a problem, am i totally wrong??

Your mate has been subject to an over zealous lecturer. I've been one more than one of these seminars, and as you stated any asbestos material in artex is very low grade stuff. Think about it, do you really imagine that potentially lethal material would be allowed to be included in any popular building material??

Forget about drilling into the stuff, what about the guy's mixing the powder base up in the first place, with the normal cloud of the stuff as you pour from the bag into the bucket or whatever.... It was always low grade and a general face mask is all that's advised on the courses i went on....

thats what i needed to hear!!!

50 years of smoking 30 smokes a day, you think i'm worried about drilling a few holes in a bit of artex? trhe dust would probably kick start my lungs back into normal operation.

well ...its not recommended that you start to grind the stuff off.....i know that makita do an artex grinder...looks a bit like a planer.....but as tel has pointed out......they stopped putting asbestos in artex in the 80s......its the stuff from the 70s that has it......

we all got to die some day. me, reckon i got another 20 years to go, got to get something back off all the tax i've paid over the years. LOL.

personally I can't wait until 20 December and start telling a few people what I really think of them ...............may look a bit silly on the 22nd mind, but feint heart never etc etc ..........

So Tel I think you're ..............................................................

YES!
the dangers and health risks of asbestos were known in the 1920s and they didnt stop using it until the 2000s!!!

Not in the quantities or with the type you would have people believe, that were lethal.... And no they weren't still using it in Artex until into the 2000's.... As others have pointed out, Artex was Asbestos free from the early 80's, ... and many manufacturers even before!!

The real lethal stuff was the BLUE and Grey Asbestos, mainly used in pipe and ducting lagging, and in some early building material such as corrugated roofing panels, internal fire door panels, and some specialised cement mixes etc

maybe OP could have rephrased it better as "a fault to earth" as opposed to "an earthing problem".
