kind of puts you off wanting to do anything but new builds really lol...might just start wiring in peoples fish tanks or something...the gold fish wont hurt me :)

I'm more paranoid than most regards the 'A' word and have the same philosophy however now that new builds aren't happening like they were before the economic world wide crash there's going to be more refurbs both domestically and commercially than you can shake a stick at!

I'm annoyed that the government scrapped the building schools for future project as this was a real oppertunity to erradicate Asbestos in schools, old schools can have asbestos in abundance generally and i hate the fact that even with all the knowledge and warnings of today we're still in the mode of, refurb it and leave it for another 30 years this kind of attitude stinks to me! Leave it for another generation to fix!

Its a sensitive subject realy but the more aware of the stuff the easier it is to identify it if its installed in an area where its not likly to get damaged or disturbed then its safe enough , its when it does get disturbed or damaged is where it becomes problematic so all i will say is be aware what you are drilling through best advice for it is to read the HSE guide to it here a link HSE: Asbestos - health and safety in the workplace

Dont know if anyone has seen Repomen, but clearly the best solution to this is one of those modded lungs..as tradesmen we should be entitled to a trade discount on such augmentations and a fixed low interest rate on repayments. It should also be enhanced with an asbestos dissolving fluid that circulates the capillaries in the lung and breaks down the asbestos and we burp it back up later as a little cloud of raspberry scented dust... dragons den moment?

ALWAYS WEAR A MASK!
One point that stuck with me while learning about asbestos years ago, was that you may think you're safe when you're not. If you are in a building and things are being moved/drilled into and you can see the dust; you immediately think 'Hang on, might need a mask here' but BE WARNED - Anything you can see is too big to go deep into your lungs and cause damage - it will filter out before then, IT'S THE STUFF THAT IS TOO SMALL TO SEE THAT CAUSES THE DAMAGE!

very good post

Just want to say I had my team and myself sent on an asbestos awareness level 2 course. It was worth every penny.
Alot of knowledge gained by everyone. We have also won extra work whilst others have been quoting, due to our approach of making customers aware of the asbestos present and the care and procedures we will take.

Unlike others that do not seem to notice the risk to there own health let alone the customer present at the time.
:)

I see a few jobs advertised needing asbestos awareness certificates, quite low paid and all seem to remain unfilled, must be a lot of asbestos as its 1960's offices and shops getting re-fitted, wonder who gets the blame if action gets taken in the future at some point by new owners/tennants or public that have been in the building if the stuff gets disturbed and ends up causing harm....would the contractor that got told not to remove it and just work around it get sued...

Hi Chaps,

Just renewed my asbestos awareness online again yesterday.

Have some course notes if anybody would like them.

Inbox me if interested.

Cheers

I think you'll need to make a few more posts before the PM system becomes available to you. Unfortunately it's an anti-spam measure that was necessary to prevent all members getting buried in unsolicited advertising.

if it is a textured ceiling coating within a domestic property it is easy enough to remove yourself without worrying, suit up mask up, apply paste to the ceiling area which you are wanting to work on, leave for around 10 minutes to soften and simply scrap off and straight into the red bag, tie off the top then put your suit and mask in the remaining slack at the top of the bag and tie again. then double bag and all done, jobs a sausage.

The last part of the job is to get rid of the waste. By using the red bag you have concluded (as the waste producer) the waste is hazardous. If DIY by home owner then some council tips will take it. If commercial waste then a registered waste company has to be found to take this one bag of hazardous waste, which is when it gets expensive.
