Interested to know howmany on here have done an asbestos awareness course

Yes, we went on one on Monday and sadly it was very interesting. I didn't know we are legally obliged to have attended such a course.

I have,but I was bit peeved to be told that it is an anual requirement
I'm not sure if thats true,but I wouldn't be surprised

The certificate I was presented with was valid for 2 years, but the tutor we had also said we could annualy have a tool box talk about the subject as long as it is recorded like an AGM

Also, there is a lot of resposibility on our shoulders should we go breaking through asbestos because of ignorance.

The HSE are cracking down on asbestos now so be aware.

The course we did lasted from 8-30 till 1-30 and cost all of £40.....well worth it

Not done one but have spent alot of time indentifying asbestos over the years

Had an uncle who worked with it he died from it's effects so you quickly learn about it

my younger brother is an asbestos surveyor, he says if you have any doubt walk away and inform whoever is in charge of the building and there your responsibility ends, oh, and breath out.

Thats pretty well what we were told, inform the duty holder etc etc.

Seems as though the old MEM rewireable distibution boards could have asbestos in, so , in the real world, what do we do?

I know what I have done in the past, your work ,and then go home.

I have got to be honest and think the main aim,especially when the course is paid for by the customer or employer,is to pass the buck
Its about the litigation culture

Once made aware it is easy for them to allay any responsibility by them saying," he should have known better", " he has been on the course"

If you found the course interesting I am surprised
I am not trying to make light of the dangers,but its got to have been one of the most boring couple of hours I have ever spent in a classroom

I found it interesting because I did not realise how much stuff had asbestos in it and the attitude of governments, all because it is a fantastic product, a shame its so bad for you really.

I know its now a blame culture (thanks to the yanks), but I also think its worth going on a course for 40 quid to help protect yourself.

Its still a growing industry in china

Ain't that the truth I have been on a job with an abestos sheet roof knocking in clips on the connecting joist

Knowing that I should not but need to earn money ? I am in denial

Education is the only way forward .

I remember the smoking Ban on Buses a few well actually 15 yaers ago and thinking cheeky @@@@@@

You wouldn't dream of smoking on a bus now !

You are correct that some of the old MEM boards have asbestos in the back of the fuse base and have sheet asbestos barriers

Don't get dust or fibres flying unless you damage it though

I am fairly new to the trade and I cant even tell you what it looks like (Maybe worth while going on the course me thinks)
