Hi just preparing to register with NIC Elecsa or NAPPIT, still not sure which is best for Domestic? But worried about re-asseement fee that I can't afford if I fail... not a positive start I know, Found exams straightforward, sensitive subject I'm sure, but does anyone know of anyone who slipped up and had to re-test and if so what they were caught out on? Was it lack of chocolate digestives ?

Hi Just
As long as you meet the scheme requirments your be ok im sure ! This is how we all feel when we have them so your not alone in your feelings ! It will be intresting to see if anyone has failed ! but when i passed with NICEIC it was easier than i thought it would be. Their not there to trip you up and do offer some sound advice ! might be worth chatting to their tech support about your jobs your showing if unsure their help with advice etc also worth seeing past threads on here on assessment questions etc.
Regards
Kung
P.S. Good luck and dont worry just stay calm and relax.

Take Kungs advice on board they dont want you to fail when you pass you are advertising them to others so its good business to have as many as possible. If you want work from your local council you are better off with the NICEIC.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Chris

This is not personal to you ,because I dont know your qualifications or experience, but it is an opinion to help you in your choice of scheme providor

Joining the NIc may be a gamble for new entrants and present members if they are DI

The consultation document that is now being discussed for Part p may make it very awkward for them to continue with their present system
It seems that there is to be involvement by the accreditation body that will mean outlawing the QS system in favour of individual registration and minimum competence levels that were supposed to be applied from the outset
The NIceic flouted those minimum competence levels by allowing short course recognition which was intended for older experienced sparks who did not possess modern qualifications
As far as I can undestand the remit will be the Napit type of criteria where individual competence and possession of recognised electrical qualifications and training can be proved

This will ensure that the persons actually doing the work will be trained and or competent, which may not be the case with Nic buisnesses at present because of that Q S sytem

Councils may find their bias toward Niceic contractors to be an embarasment and may have their attitudes changed
In theory the councils are not permitted to show bias, however, through ignorance, practically they can and do
It could be an advantage being Nic for the present but for the future it may be a backward step

Whichever you chose, the likelyhood is that you will be accepted on the first visit
I have heard of not one person trained and experienced or just out of the classroom who has not been accepted by the schemes so far

Re visit fees shouldn't be a problem for you

The old company I use to work for failed the assessment the first time they went for it (NICEIC Approved contractor). Because they wasn't writing out smoke certs as well as new electrical installation cert on rewires. And yes it was befor my time their:p

Thanks for the replies, it's interesting that Des56 should refer to the council's view because after talking to them about Building Control Applications even though 1.21 and 1.22 Part P states 'Where notifiable work is carried out by a person not registered...... ... building control body becomes responsible for making sure the work is safe and complies with all relevant requirements of the Building regs' it appears that some councils wave the NIC requirement flag to negate responsibility as they don't have qualified inspectors to sign off installations.
I am sure that the NIC will jump to the new tune and help already registered DI's if new legislation outlaws current rules but I can see it becoming imposible for new DI registration unless fully qualified (Not a bad thing perhaps?) The councils better get up to speed with I&T if this is the case, they may find they have a bit more work...
I was planning to do the 2330 this year only to find it becomes obsolete at the end of the year...

It won't "become obsolete". It simply won't be offered to any more students.

I and many others have qualifications which are no longer offered by City & Guilds - that doesn't mean that they aren't recognised. So I see no problem with you going ahead with the 2330.

Sorry, wrong term it will always be recognised and valued but tthe last of the 2330 courses startd in September09 and I think the replacement is the C&G 2357 which is the 2330 and the 2356NVQ rolled into one no info on this yet though from the colleges but hopefully it won't be a watered down version of past qualifications. What it means though is the courses are likely to be run over a longer duration as they are combined so I hear.

When are people thinking the ruling for NIC registrations will be changing then? As Jason says, surely it will only be for new registrations. They can't suddenly knock a huge percentage of their paid up contractors off the books. If this happens though they could demand you take a certain course within the next 12 months or something. In reality I think they'd just concentrate on the new applications and maybe change the criteria. I'm not signed up with them yet though so hopefully they'll hold off until I've got my bit of paper and sticker!

Not sure about the NICEIC thing, but I presume that existing registrants might, as you suggest, be given a certain period of time to meet the new criteria.

That said, I know nothing about it so am merely speculating.
