Hello all, firstly im well aware it’s frowned upon to ask college related questions for you guys to answer so I’ll try and phrase this accordingly.

I don’t want your answer just a pointer if possible.

I’ve a layout of a building with a main supply panel and 4 dbs closeby. The 4 dbs will feed single and three phase jobs such as lighting or security systems etc. 2 are sp and 2 are tp.

My question I have to answer is ‘identify a suitable distribution system’ to each and explain your reasons.

What I’m asking you guys is, would that suggest they wish to know exactly how you come out of the main panel (sp or tp and the breaker rating), what cable, how long, what’s the vd, am I using tp or sp db’s, trunking or tray or conduit etc, will I use rcd protection?

It’s a very vague question to me so any advise would be appreciated. If they asked what earthing system to a shed or something that would have a clear concise answer so I’m a little confused!

Thank you in advance

I would first start with what containment I would be using i.e if your using conduit you wouldn't use t+e you would use singles and like wise if you chose tray you wouldn't use single cables.

For cable size and breaker size you will probably need to show your cable calculations for them and the volt drop. Length of run should you should be able to use a scale ruler and measure roughly the run you would take and add 5% on top of that. (Check your regs books/OSG)

If you do use containment not sure how ---- they would be but you also might need to calculate your spacing factors for the size of trunking/conduit.

Not all circuits need RCD protection either but i would say smokes/security go on the non RCD side if you decide that with either an MCB/RCBO.
If you have any circuits that require 3 phases at them I.e a motor you will obviously have to use your three phase board(s).

Also don't forget some circuits need curtains types of breakers I.e if you have a lot of fluorescents you should look at c type breakers liekwise say a welder you should look at d types.
