Alot of the time people have a good attitude towards me and respect the fact I have been to college an learnt the trade just like men but sometimes some people are so ignorant towards me as I am a female electrician trying to find a full time job. I think this is disgusting.

female electricians are still a bit thin on the ground , and so you will get this attitude from some. hopefully, it will gradually change. makes no difference to me whether a spark is male or female, as long as they're competent. the only difference will be apparent when physical strength is needed. generally, females will be a bit lacking in this department, but that should not constitute any sexism. just be yourself, give as much back as you get.

Male or Female, makes no differance as long as you're competant, I've worked for female engineers in the past without any problems. In fact I had more respect for them than their male counterparts due to their acheivement in what's a predominantly male profession.

I think you need to grow a thicker skin.
Women drivers, women engineers ... women anything in fact are going to get some stick - it's life - deal with it.

The "oh poor me" attitude will get you precisely no where.

I agree entirely with this.

Spot-on Tel.

Female, young, old, inexperienced, 'wrong' background, face doesn't fit... All reasons people don't get jobs, especially as electricians, and furthermore as full time ones.
A lot of companies will only employ people they know, so it's not just you. Far from it.
Blaming everything on 'sexism' is a pretty cheap shot and as Geordie says won't get you anywhere.

@OP. bear in mind that things have improved over the years. 100 years ago, when geordie spark did his apprenticeship, you would not have been let out of the kitchen, let alone be allowed to play with electrical stuff. :censored:

I have just made you an Honourary Geordie for that well written post bonny lad !!! :)

In 8 years ive only met two people who had a problem with me being female. That isnt many in the grand scheme of things. You just have to prove yourself and earn the respect. Generally now people are amazed and proud that im female.

Telectrix - your spot on. The only thing that I ever struggle with is physical strength. Its why I stayed away from industrial. But I joined a gym 2 weeks ago and have already made my arm strength better, can lift an extra 3kgs on the machines!!

I'm 5ft2 and have had no problem with carrying transformers, drums of cable or doing chases. I turfed a huge armored up 3 flights as a 2nd year apprentice, I was dead for next 2 days but I did it!
