I am an australian A grade electrician moving to london and was wondering if there is a way around getting the 17th edition wiring qualification as it seems a large cost when im fully qualified. Some people i have spoken to say you can get away with not having it if you do not work on construction sights.

Can anyone shed some more light on this matter?

Nah mate,

if you work on construction sites you probably will need an ECS card. Minimum requirement to get one
is C&G 2381 17th edition. You might get away if you work in an industrial environment, e.g. Maintenance Electrician for planned maintenance and bench repair work. If you want to work on a domestic site you need the 17th. Costs about ÂŁ380.-

Make sure you a have work permit first before you come as if don't it is the same as Oz you will be on the next flight home

I work for an Australian company in London called Downunder Tradies Group. We sell Start Up Packs to all the Australian, Newzealand and South Africans mainly electricians and plumbers who have just arrived and need help getting their qualifications changed over, we are a test centre too so you can do the 17th Edition, ECS, and get your JIB Card processed through us as well.

Once we have everything organised for you, you are ready for work! We also keep your registrations details and work as a recruitment agency so if we have any work going we can give you a call and give you a job!!

Have a look at our website Downunder Tradies - Home

What would i need to move out there?. Got everything but 2391 taken theory, practical tomorrow fingers crossed nearly there.
Seriously thinking of kicking this country behind its getting very silly here, so very sad i can say this.

I imagine you have some kind of Australian regulations book? And is it written in very legal, formal type language? If that's the case then it won't be too daunting at all for you to gen up on UK regs. Get a copy of the 17th regs, surf the net for exam examples and check forums like this for questions on the regs. Give it about a month of reading up, having already applied to take the EXAM ONLY (this will cost you a max of 70 quid and there are colleges that allow you to take the exam only instead of forking out 400-600 quid on a course).

If you are going to London then ring around the colleges to see who does the exam (without doing a course) and book your place. If you can't find one then ring Guildford (contact me through a pm and I'll give you phone number etc if you like). Not far from London at all and they charge aprox 30 quid registration and another 38 for the exam.

More concerned that a qualified electrician would want to circumnavigate the Regulations of a country he wishes to work in.

My thoughts exactly malcom Im assuming /hoping its just the way he has asked the question he hopefully means
"Is there any way I can get work as an electrician earning good money till I get my 17th edd?" to which my answer would be Not a lot as there will be 50 guys with 17th edd and 100 polish willin to work for sod all in the que before you Sozz m8 just wondering If your leaving OZ to come here How can I get a job in Oz without qualifications that are recognised there?

the worrying thing is wanting to move to here when everybody here wants to leave!
