Hi guys,

I am quoting for the above on a job they require five of them. There might be a simple answer which I'm overlooking...

Five heaters fed via own rcd cu, the cu would only be live during off peak? Am I correct in this bit or do some meters have built in timer so in effect heater cu being live at all times and cheaper rate switches in automatically which reduces the cost of the storage mode of the heaters?

Otherwise how else would the convector option of the heater work if rcd cu dead during peak times?

Any help would be great thanks!

I'm probably over looking something but I can't see where

Hi mate,

Yes you are overlooking something.

The heaters store the heat during the powered up time, i.e on off peak electric. they can also be set to discharge heat during this period. Usually they will have 2 dials, one for input, and one for output. You set them a bit by trial and error for the environment that they are installed in. These things store the heat, which is then discharged when the power is off, at the output setting you set it to, so it needs no power whilst doing this.

The only problem with this set up, is when it drops very cold, and you cant heat the heaters up again till midnight or whenever.

The last time i did a job like this, was on a house that had economy seven for the full installation, and i installed the heaters using timer SFCU's which i set for the economy seven tariff time, these had an override switch, so they could be turned on in the day at standard tariff if needed.

Cheers...........Howard

PS forgot to add, the convection occurs naturally, warm air rises, drawing cold air in through the bottom of the heater, and so warming it.

If you are fitting that type of heater you also require a permanent supply for the convector heater part also off a sfs. I have just replaced one in a rented flat that was off the ring for the convector and the storage heater e7 radial.

It's making sense now thanks! Next issue is council won't allow me to alter existing circuits incase of unforeseen faults etc. so it's starting to look like I need to install a 'dual' consumer unit ie unit with two main switches and each heater looking to have one mcb for the off peak and one mcb for the on peak convector got a feeling job turning into one of them jobs which makes you want to break down!

If the original s/h set up did not have provision for a 24 hour supply to convectors, but the Council are now asking you install s/hs which also have convectors fitted, then they are not asking for a like for like set up and therefore must allow you to price in circuits for the convectors.....simples. Don't assume the Council really understand what they are asking you to do - point out the problem and ask them to confirm what thy actually want!

Regards.

The standard set up for storage heater is the lounge heater is a duel supply and the rest in the house are off peak the duel heater has an off peak supply and a normal or 24 hour supply and this is handy when its not cold enough to put the off peak supply on but you may want to air the room. After that you have the input or rate of charge on the unit and the output the rate of discharge.

A lot of people do not like storage heaters but are stuck with them due to no gas in the property and that they have to anticipate when they will need them
