I came across this device called rccb model SMART made by safe-t, while on holiday in Thailand. It seems far advanced to what we have here in uk and I was wondering does anyone know of a similar product here. You can find it at SAFE-T-CUT.com (sorry link not working)
It claims to simulate the test current every 4 hours and give an audible signal if it malfunctions ie if it doesn't trip. Also trips on overload, short circuit, leakage select-able from 6,10,20,30 ma,overvoltage of 25%,terminal temperature sensor to prevent fires which may come from loose connection screw, too small wire diameter,or overload. Also cuts off on live/neutral reversal and get this...has an inbuilt emergency light.Cant seem to find a price though.

The safe T cut units are often used in European countries as well they tend to be a first connection to the incoming supply, often designed to also limit the current that you can take as supplies are often priced by the total load permissible. i.e. you pay for a 20A supply or pay more for a 40A supply.
The adjustable levels are just a standard adjustable RCCB, though I am not sure on the self checking function availability over here. (yes, Eaton have a single unit with current monitoring: dRCM)
I do remember a demonstration of a self resetting RCD (possibly circutor) that on a transient fault would test the load and if it was now OK would turn the RCD back on, but would not do so if there were a short circuit or high level fault current. These were designed for keeping freezers from defrosting on minor faults.
I like the EM light idea.

I have seen a Schneider RED unit in use before mounted on a DIN rail , called an ACTI9 2 pole Auto Recloser , I believe RS components do them .....
