My gran bless her has just went out and bought an oversized wooden unit and there is 3 holes on top of it for downlighters. I have purchased 3 low voltage down lighters with tranys so the heat of lamps don’t burn the wood and am wondering whether to spur it from a nearby socket using a switch spur only problem is that the spur will be about a meter high for ease of access for her and in a few weeks or months when she decides to move the unit which is bound to happen then it will be stuck there. Another idea I thought of was putting a plug top on the a bit flex on 230v side of tranny and just putting a 3A fuse inside it. Any better ideas?

You need "F" marked luminaires.
On the box will be an 'F' inside a triangle, this means suitable for mounting on a normally flammable surface.
Most ELV downlighters will be 'F' marked only when used with 35w lamps, but check the instructions.

If you are worried about heat marks on the wood, use "heat forward" (aluminium reflector) lamps, which are more expensive, but throw the heat mainly down and not up.

and then rather than messing about, wire a 13amp plug on the end and plug it into a socket.....voila 1 extension lead, no regs to worry about, no electrician to pay and ultimate flexibility!
