Aren't they crap for installing and who the hell designs them, obviously they have never installed them! Makes me laugh when it says in the instructions to wrap chocolate block connector in insulation tape ( not supplied)

Really? Show me a photo of these instructions dude, as I have installed MANY lights from aforementioned suppliers, and I have never seen anything like that! I'm not saying you're lying mind you, I just want to see those instructions and exactly who is selling them with them!

Can't say I'm full of shock horror as the majority of replacement light fittings replaced in the uk have probably been replaced by diyers with connector block shoved back up through the hole in the ceiling. And only wrapped in insulation tape in the unlikely event there was some to hand.

I have seen sellotape before now that has fallen off above the ceiling of course , the worst thing is , if instructions like this tell Joe Public to do this sort of thing , they then think they can do it anywhere on their wiring in the home ....

Also, what connector blocks are made from chocolate? They sound yummy though.

Have you never heard of chocolate block? Have you been living under a rock or something?
It's the slang term for cheap plastic connector strip, often shortened to choc-block.
It's the reason a choc box enclosure is called that, it is designed to enclose choc blocks

I call it cheese block, if I thought it was remotely like chocolate I'd probably have a crack at eating it, I wonder if they do them in brown... More realistic.

Yes, semi transparent, white, black, brown, red and porcelain are available as standard, each colour will often relate to its max operating temperature.
As you should already know the semi transparent is not rated to 70C operation so shouldn't be used for regular mains installations, the white/black ones should be the minimum.

semi transparent - ~50C
white and black 70C
Brown and red are higher temperatures
porcelain is very high temperatures

good reason for neutrals in the switches and single cable dropping down to the light fittings.
those things are just not designed for uk ceiling rose wiring.
having a selection of wagos helps a lot too.

The reason being, that the vast majority of light fitting are now bought in from overseas markets, and will generally be manufactured to suit the country of origin. Unfortunately most of the lighting manufacturers the UK did have, and that did provide suitable terminations and space were undermined by the Thatcher era many years ago now and all but the bigger companies like Thorn disappeared, but i suppose you can blame Blair for that too!! ...lol!!

20/30 years ago, almost every light fitting bought in the UK be they for domestic, commercial and industrial were provided with a means of connection to a standard conduit besa box, now it's more by luck than by design....

Horrendous mate.

The ceramic wall fittings are the absolute worst. I add money on if i need to fit them.

I once assumed the fixing holes on the back were level (silly me) mounted a light and put the measure on it to find it was way out. Took the light off and put the level across the plugs in the wall.... Level?!

Checked the light, the holes were 10mm out! They are terrible.

It's on my bucket list - meet a lighting designer in a dark alley with a baseball bat ....

Two things that'll send a shiver down my spine when the customer produces the light fittings they've bought: "Ikea", or "Specially made in China for [insert name of shed here]"
