I'm not sure what happened to the mechanism, whether it was the geometry of the bulb or just an old mechanism, but with a huge amount of jiggling and levering it came off - one bayonet lug less but out most importantly. Can the shade be taken off the ring at all to give a better hold of the bulb?
screw the collar and ring back onto the lampholder.
hold the lampholder and push up on the bulb against the spring, and turn anticlockwise. I think its just a little tight.
I think this is a safety type lampholder where the pins are only live when a bulb is fully inserted... so thers some extra mechanism there to push against.
